In a landmark announcement that highlights the UAE’s emergence as a global entertainment hub, The Walt Disney Company has revealed plans to open its first Middle Eastern theme park in Abu Dhabi. The project, a collaboration with local developer Miral, will be located on Yas Island and marks Disney’s seventh global resort. With a promise to combine Disney magic with local culture and modern technology, Disneyland Abu Dhabi aims to attract millions of visitors from the Middle East, Africa, India, Asia, Europe, and beyond.
Blending Disney Magic with Emirati Culture
Disney CEO Robert Iger described the park as “authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati,” reflecting a unique blend of beloved Disney stories and characters with the vibrant heritage, architecture, and natural beauty of Abu Dhabi. Yas Island, already home to renowned attractions such as Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and Sea World, will now add a globally iconic brand to its portfolio. Iger noted that many potential Disney visitors from the region face long and expensive journeys to reach existing parks. This new location aims to address that gap, offering a more accessible Disney experience to hundreds of millions across the region.
The resort will be developed, funded, and operated by Miral, with Disney providing creative oversight. According to Disney Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro, the new destination will be the company’s most “modern” and “tech-forward” park to date. This strategic partnership allows Disney to expand its global footprint while leveraging Miral’s established presence in the UAE’s tourism and entertainment landscape.
Strategic Timing and Positive Financial Indicators
The announcement comes just days before a scheduled visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to the Gulf region, signaling deepening ties between American enterprises and Middle Eastern markets. Additionally, Disney’s move coincides with a strong financial quarter. The company reported a seven percent increase in revenue, reaching $23.6 billion from January to March. Notably, its Disney+ streaming service defied expectations by gaining 1.4 million new subscribers, raising the total to 126 million. The Experiences segment, which includes its theme parks, saw revenues climb to $8.9 billion.
With the addition of Disneyland Abu Dhabi, Disney continues its global expansion, building on the success of its parks in California, Florida, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
