The Delhi government is set to launch the “Delhi Sports Mahakumbh” from February 13, 2026, marking a significant step in the capital’s sporting history. Designed on the lines of the Khelo India initiative, the event aims to create a strong grassroots sports ecosystem and provide a competitive platform for emerging athletes.
Ahead of the launch, Education and Sports Minister Ashish Sood held an interactive dialogue with sports influencers, media professionals, fitness coaches, and Arjuna Award recipients from across the country. Over 50 participants attended the session, where the vision and long-term objectives of the Mahakumbh were outlined.
The minister stated that Delhi possesses immense sporting talent, and the primary requirement is to provide the right platform and opportunities. In the initial phase, competitions will be held in athletics, football, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, and other selected disciplines.
Events will be organized across 17 major stadiums in Delhi, including the Chhatrasal Stadium, Bawana, Najafgarh, Vikaspuri, and sports facilities in South Delhi. The inaugural ceremony will be held at Chhatrasal Stadium, with Delhi’s para-athletes leading the ceremonial march-past.
According to the minister, more than 16,000 athletes have already registered, and the process remains open. The government aims to reach participation of over 30,000 athletes during the month-long event, with plans to expand the initiative to engage over 100,000 athletes annually in the coming years.
Special emphasis has been placed on women’s participation, with dedicated measures for safety and inclusivity. The initiative is expected to encourage greater female representation in sports and inspire wider community engagement.
The Mahakumbh will also serve as a catalyst for improving sports infrastructure in Delhi. Hosting competitions across multiple venues will help assess existing facilities and guide future upgrades.
Indian international cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed as the brand ambassador for the Delhi Sports Mahakumbh to motivate young athletes and enhance public engagement.
The minister emphasized that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government is committed to building a robust, inclusive, and world-class sports culture in the capital.
