  • Rahul Gandhi's critiques subtly shape Modi-centric election discourse.
  • Congress avoids direct Modi vs Rahul narrative for strategic reasons.

As the 2024 Lok Sabha Election unfolds, the Congress party maintains a deliberate distance from framing the electoral battle as Narendra Modi versus Rahul Gandhi. Recognizing the inherent pitfalls, the Congress refrains from engaging in a direct confrontation with the incumbent Prime Minister.

Reflecting on past strategies, in 2014, the Congress centered its campaign on Rahul Gandhi’s slogan, ‘Chowkidar chor hai,’ triggering a robust counter attack from the BJP. This tactic was swiftly countered by the BJP, reshaping the narrative around the chowkidar symbolizing national security. Despite initial perceptions of a Modi versus Rahul showdown, both Rahul Gandhi and the Congress clarified that Rahul Gandhi wasn’t contesting for the top leadership role, albeit as Congress President at the time.

The BJP perceives Rahul Gandhi as a key asset in their electoral strategy, with his criticisms allegedly bolstering BJP support. Despite potential backlashes from his statements, Rahul Gandhi remains resolute in his convictions, often stirring controversy within his own party ranks.

However, the election discourse gravitates towards a Modi versus Rahul dynamic due to Gandhi’s assertive stance against the Modi government’s policies. Rahul Gandhi’s critiques, from challenging the inclusivity of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikaas’ to advocating for wealth redistribution, juxtapose against Narendra Modi’s agenda.

Despite Rahul Gandhi’s relinquishment of the party presidency, Congress promotional material continues to center around him, positioning him as the primary adversary to the Rahul Gandhi strategically aligns his rallies with Narendra Modi’s schedule, directly confronting the PM’s narratives at every opportunity.

While the Congress subtly distances itself from overtly framing the contest as Modi versus Rahul, their actions imply otherwise. This narrative subtly benefits the BJP, enabling them to capitalize on Gandhi’s critiques.

In sum, the Congress seems willing to risk a Modi versus Rahul narrative, perceiving it as a strategic advantage amidst potential voter fatigue with the BJP. Rahul Gandhi’s open challenge to Modi’s electoral performance underscores this strategy, despite potential voter skepticism.

Although the Congress refrains from explicitly endorsing a Modi versus Rahul contest, their actions speak louder, shaping the electoral discourse accordingly.
