In a sharp rebuttal to Rahul Gandhi’s recent claim accusing the Election Commission and the BJP of committing “a huge criminal fraud” in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dismissed the allegations as baseless, politically motivated, and a deliberate attempt to malign the credibility of constitutional institutions. Senior BJP leaders accused the Congress of selectively attacking democratic bodies whenever electoral outcomes are unfavorable to them, emphasizing that such tactics insult the people’s mandate and undermine the democratic process. The party urged the opposition to respect the sanctity of democratic institutions and allow Parliament to function without distractions.
Political Motives Behind Fraud Claims
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju was among the first to respond, highlighting how Congress’s strategy has consistently involved targeting constitutional bodies like the judiciary and the Election Commission when decisions do not go their way. Rijiju pointed out that special revisions of electoral rolls are routine and have occurred multiple times, including in Maharashtra, where the Congress alliance had secured a majority in the Lok Sabha. The minister argued that Congress’s current outrage is selective and motivated by their recent poor performance in state assemblies, including Karnataka and elsewhere.
“Whenever the results are not in their favor, they begin targeting institutions instead of accepting the verdict,” Rijiju said, dismissing Rahul Gandhi’s allegations as “completely bogus” and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the Election Commission’s reputation. He reiterated that the government does not interfere with independent constitutional authorities, particularly when electoral roll revisions are underway, stressing the importance of respecting the autonomy of such institutions.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan further criticized Rahul Gandhi, labeling him “Bayan Bahadur” (a person who makes grandiose claims without basis) and accusing the Congress of systematic attacks on constitutional institutions. Pradhan suggested there may be a larger conspiracy aimed at destabilizing India’s democratic fabric, driven by political desperation following electoral setbacks.
“By maligning the Election Commission, Rahul Gandhi is not only questioning an institution but also insulting the intelligent choice of Indian voters,” Pradhan said in a social media post. He also questioned why neither the Congress nor its allies approached the Election Commission when complaints were invited regarding Special Summary Revision (SSR) in Bihar, implying that the opposition’s outrage is opportunistic and lacks consistency.
Selective Outrage and Political Hypocrisy
BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra echoed these sentiments by calling out the Congress party’s “selective outrage.” Patra noted that the Congress has remained silent on electoral roll issues in states where it won, such as Himachal Pradesh and Telangana, and accused Rahul Gandhi of being inconsistent in his criticism.
“If the Election Commission were truly compromised, how could Congress celebrate sweeping victories? Their selective outrage exposes their political agenda,” Patra stated. He emphasized that the opposition’s accusations are less about electoral integrity and more about damaging the image of democratic institutions for political gain.
Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad described Rahul Gandhi’s comments as “irresponsible and shameless,” claiming they stem from frustration over Congress’s repeated electoral defeats. Prasad said voters continue to reject the Congress due to such baseless allegations and irresponsible behavior, underlining the BJP’s commitment to uphold democracy and its institutions.
The party’s leaders collectively portrayed Rahul Gandhi’s remarks as an expression of political desperation and urged the opposition to focus on constructive political debate rather than attacking foundational democratic bodies.
