As US President Donald Trump reignites global tariff tensions, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a crucial phone call to reaffirm and expand their strategic partnership. The call, which came amid rising trade protectionism and Trump’s fresh accusations against the BRICS alliance, highlighted the need for greater South-South cooperation and collaboration in areas including trade, energy, defence, agriculture, health and technology.

During the conversation, both leaders expressed a strong desire to deepen cooperation between India and Brazil, particularly in light of the shifting global economic landscape. PM Modi shared his appreciation for Luiz Inácio Lula’s warm hospitality during his recent visit to Brazil and underscored the importance of strengthening people-centric ties between the two nations. His message, posted on X (formerly Twitter), reflected a tone of optimism and commitment to mutual growth through collaborative efforts in key sectors.

“Had a good conversation with President Luiz Inácio Lula. Thanked him for making my visit to Brazil memorable and meaningful. We are committed to deepening our Strategic Partnership including in trade, energy, tech, defence, health and more. A strong, people-centric partnership between Global South nations benefits everyone,” PM Modi wrote.

BRICS under fire as Trump labels bloc ‘anti-American’

The timing of the call is significant. Luiz Inácio Lula’s outreach to PM Modi comes in the backdrop of Trump’s recent remarks branding the BRICS group as “anti-American.” Just last month, while the BRICS nations gathered for a summit in Rio de Janeiro, Trump threatened additional 10% tariffs on member countries, escalating concerns over global trade fragmentation.

Luiz Inácio Lula, taking a proactive stance against this protectionist rhetoric, had earlier indicated his intention to call both Indian and Chinese leaders to discuss a coordinated response to Trump’s tariff policies. His aim, as per earlier public remarks, was to initiate a unified BRICS dialogue to counter growing economic pressure from Washington.

While the content of the India-Brazil call wasn’t made fully public, it is understood that global trade and tariff challenges were central to the discussion. The two leaders reportedly explored ways to shield their economies from external shocks and leverage their partnership to ensure economic resilience. Brazil is expected to further this agenda through upcoming discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which Luiz Inácio Lula plans to initiate soon.

The call also underscored the potential of BRICS as a platform not only for economic coordination but also for geopolitical alignment among emerging economies. As traditional Western-led institutions face criticism over inequities in global decision-making, countries like India and Brazil are pushing for a multipolar world order where voices from the Global South are amplified.

Strategic ties beyond trade: energy, defence, and health collaboration

India and Brazil have shared a strategic relationship for decades, built on mutual respect and cooperation in multilateral forums like the United Nations, WTO, and BRICS. However, Thursday’s call highlighted an expanded agenda, where both countries aim to deepen their bilateral ties across newer, high-impact sectors.

In the energy domain, both leaders emphasized their shared focus on clean energy initiatives. With both India and Brazil being key players in biofuels and solar energy, collaboration in renewable energy was discussed as a major pillar of future ties. The conversation reportedly included deliberations on joint research, technology sharing, and investment opportunities in sustainable energy sectors.

Defence cooperation also featured prominently in the conversation. India and Brazil have previously expressed interest in defence collaboration, especially in areas of joint training, defence manufacturing, and sharing of strategic technologies. Thursday’s engagement is expected to act as a catalyst for taking these plans forward, particularly as both countries seek to boost indigenous defence capabilities.

Health and agriculture, two critical areas of mutual interest, were also part of the agenda. With global supply chains under pressure, India and Brazil see immense potential in expanding collaboration in pharmaceutical production, vaccine development, and agri-tech innovations. Brazil’s expertise in large-scale agricultural production and India’s biotech and pharma strengths offer a natural complementarity.

People-to-people ties were given special attention as well, with both leaders recognizing the value of cultural exchange, educational collaborations, and greater mobility of professionals. As two vibrant democracies with youthful populations, India and Brazil aim to build bridges beyond just trade, fostering deeper understanding and long-term goodwill.

While the discussion avoided direct mention of the US, the backdrop of Trump’s aggressive trade stance clearly framed the urgency of the call. Both leaders appeared united in their commitment to fortifying their economies through inclusive, diversified, and cooperative means.

The diplomatic development also coincided with New Delhi’s reaffirmation that Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India later this year. The Indian government also hinted that PM Modi may travel to China this month for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, where broader geopolitical and economic strategies among Asian powers will be on the table.

The PM Modi-Luiz Inácio Lula call thus reflects a broader strategic pivot in Indian foreign policy—one that emphasizes regional cooperation, multilateralism, and South-South solidarity. As global power equations continue to shift, New Delhi is actively reinforcing partnerships that align with its goal of becoming a leading voice for the Global South.

Thursday’s dialogue between the Indian and Brazilian leaders marks a crucial step in that direction, signaling a future where emerging economies shape their own course, independent of dominant powers and disruptive rhetoric.
