Rekha Patra, BJP candidate for Basirhat Lok Sabha seat and survivor of the Sandeshkhali incident in West Bengal, has been granted ‘X-category’ security protection by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This decision comes in light of her leading protests against suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan.
The security provision by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) follows an Intelligence Bureau (IB) report indicating potential threats to her safety. Voting for the Basirhat constituency is slated for June 1, marking the final phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Patra faces competition from Trinamool Congress’s Haji Nurul Islam, replacing current MP Nusrat Jahan.
In addition to Rekha Patra, five other BJP leaders in West Bengal have also been granted security cover by the MHA. This includes ‘X-category’ protection for Pranat Tudu, the party’s candidate from Jhargram, Nirmal Saha from Bahrampur, Ashok Kandari from Jaynagar, and Ashok Purkait from Mathurapur. Karthik Paul, BJP candidate for Raiganj, has been provided ‘Y-category’ security protection.
Since the announcement of Lok Sabha elections, the MHA has extended security to over two dozen BJP leaders in West Bengal. Presently, more than 100 BJP leaders receive security protection from the Central government, with CISF commandos assigned for their safety.
