The sports ministry has approved top Indian archer Deepika Kumari’s proposal to train in South Korea ahead of the Olympic World Qualification tournament. Deepika Kumari will spend 13 days at the Kim Hyung Tak Archery School in Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea, before heading to Antalya for the crucial qualification event.
The Olympic World Qualification tournament is a pivotal opportunity for the 29-year-old to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics 2024. Recently re-inducted into the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) following her consistent performances, including a silver medal at the World Cup in Shanghai in April, Deepika Kumari aims to refine her skills under the guidance of renowned archery coach Kim Hyung Tak.
Kim Hyung Tak, known for his high-level technical expertise, has become a sought-after coach in the archery world. He recently conducted a seminar and coaching stint in India, attended by prominent Indian archers such as Deepika Kumari, Dhiraj Bommadevara, and Ankita Bhakat, along with top Indian coaches. During the seminar at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre in Sonipat, Kim Hyung Tak utilized dart-fish video analysis to identify and suggest corrections for various technical issues in archers’ shooting techniques. He also highlighted the latest sports science techniques for analyzing biomechanics.
In addition to approving Deepika’s training, the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) has granted financial assistance to both the men’s and women’s archery teams for the procurement of physiotherapy equipment in preparation for the Paris Olympics 2024. The MOC also approved the purchase of archery equipment for Pravin Jadhav and addressed other training and financial requests.
Shooter Raiza Dhillon received approval to train in India and Italy, while trap shooter Rajeshwari Kumari’s request for assistance with vision and eye training was also granted. Further approvals included support for athletes Eldhose Paul, Kishore Kumar Jena, and HS Prannoy to compete in various international events.
These steps are part of India’s broader strategy to enhance the preparation and performance of its athletes in the run-up to the Paris Olympics. By providing top-notch training opportunities and addressing equipment and support needs, the sports ministry and MOC aim to boost India’s prospects on the global stage.
