The Australian government has issued a formal demand for Israel to take action following a drone strike that resulted in the deaths of seven aid workers, including Australian national Zomi Frankcom.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong, along with Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, sent a letter to Israeli counterparts expressing dissatisfaction with the initial findings of the Israel Defense Forces’ investigation into the incident. The investigation’s outcome did not meet Australia’s expectations.
“We acknowledge since we sent the letter Israel has now confirmed that two individuals involved in this incident have been stood down,” Penny Wong stated, indicating Israel’s response. However, she highlighted that the government is awaiting further action.
Penny Wong stressed the need for accountability, stating, “Appropriate action must be taken against the individuals who are responsible for these tragic events.” She also confirmed the appointment of a special adviser to ensure a thorough investigation into the IDF drone strike.
The IDF had previously announced the dismissal of two officers and reprimanded three others for their roles in the incident, citing mishandling of critical information and violations of engagement rules.
Israeli Lt Col Peter Lerner expressed regret for the “very grave mistake” and assured that officers involved in the strike would face consequences.
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticized Israel’s response, stating that describing the killings as a mere consequence of war is insufficient and unacceptable. The incident has led to mounting international pressure on Israel, with US President Joe Biden urging concrete actions to protect civilians and aid workers in future conflicts.
Penny Wong emphasized that this was not an isolated event, citing previous attacks on aid convoys and humanitarian workers. She stressed the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and ensuring the protection of civilians in conflict zones.
The Australian government’s demand signals a diplomatic challenge for Israel, as it faces scrutiny over its military actions in Gaza. The response from Israeli authorities and further developments in the investigation will be closely monitored by the international community.
