In a significant anti-infiltration operation, the Indian Army successfully neutralized two terrorists at the India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. The operation took place in the Nowshera sector during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, according to official reports. The terrorists were killed as they attempted to infiltrate into Indian territory, and a large cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, was recovered from the scene.
The operation was conducted with precision as the Army, acting on intelligence inputs, kept the area under surveillance. The region was illuminated to prevent further infiltration attempts and to ensure a safe and thorough search. While two terrorists were confirmed killed, security forces suspect that additional infiltrators might have been hit during the crossfire. A massive search operation has been launched to comb the area and locate any remaining militants.
This successful operation comes just days after another gunfight between security forces and terrorists in the same district. On September 3, a group of terrorists opened fire on the Army during a search operation. While the terrorists managed to flee, no casualties were reported. These incidents highlight the persistent threat of cross-border infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in sensitive border districts like Rajouri.
In the last week of August, the Army conducted another major operation in Rajouri, targeting a suspected terrorist hideout in the Lathi area. Although details of that operation remain classified, it reflects the ongoing efforts by Indian security forces to combat terrorism in the region. Furthermore, in July, a terrorist attack on a security post in the Gundha area of Rajouri resulted in one Indian soldier being injured. These recurring incidents underline the heightened security situation in the region, especially with the presence of militants attempting to infiltrate or carry out attacks on security installations.
The recent infiltration attempts and encounters come at a critical time, as Jammu and Kashmir is set to hold Assembly elections in three phases—on September 18, September 25, and October 1. Security forces are on high alert to prevent any disruption during the election period, which could be targeted by militant groups. The results of the elections are expected to be announced on October 4, and ensuring a peaceful environment for the polls remains a top priority for the authorities in the region.
