The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a critical alert as Covid-19 cases begin to surge once more. The agency reports a significant increase in the percentage of positive tests across 84 countries in recent weeks, highlighting a troubling rise in infections and the potential emergence of more severe variants.
Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove of the WHO emphasized that Covid-19 remains a significant global concern. “Covid-19 is still very much with us and circulating in all countries,” she stated during a press briefing in Geneva. According to data from WHO’s sentinel-based surveillance system, the percentage of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 has been climbing steadily. Overall, test positivity rates are above 10 percent, with Europe seeing figures exceeding 20 percent.
The resurgence of Covid-19 has been notably pronounced this summer, a period traditionally less favorable for respiratory viruses. High infection rates are being reported in the Americas, Europe, and the Western Pacific. Surveillance of wastewater indicates that the actual circulation of the virus could be 2 to 20 times higher than current reported cases. This is unusual for this time of year, as respiratory viruses typically peak in colder months.
Recent months have seen a troubling trend, with surges of Covid-19 occurring regardless of seasonal variations. At the Paris Olympics, at least 40 athletes have tested positive for Covid-19 or other respiratory illnesses, underscoring the virus’s ongoing impact on global events.
Dr. Van Kerkhove stressed the importance of personal protective measures and vaccination. “It is crucial to take steps to reduce the risk of infection and severe disease. Ensuring that you have received a Covid-19 vaccination dose in the past 12 months is especially important for those in at-risk groups,” she advised.
Despite the increased demand for Covid-19 vaccines, the WHO notes that vaccine availability has significantly decreased over the past 12 to 18 months. The number of vaccine producers has diminished, affecting the supply and distribution pace. Dr. Van Kerkhove acknowledged the challenges faced by manufacturers but reaffirmed the continued need for Covid-19 vaccines in the market.
The WHO’s alert serves as a reminder that Covid-19 remains a persistent threat, and vigilance is necessary to manage and mitigate its impact.
