  • Deadly blast at illegal Meghalaya coal mine kills 18

Shillong, February 5, 2026: At least 18 people were killed and one person sustained injuries after a powerful explosion ripped through an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya on Thursday morning. The incident occurred in the coal-rich East Jaintia Hills district, a region that has repeatedly witnessed accidents linked to unsafe and unlawful mining practices.

Officials said several others are feared trapped inside the mine, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further as rescue operations continue. The blast underscores the persistent dangers associated with illegal coal extraction in the state, despite repeated warnings and regulatory interventions.

Immediately after the explosion, teams from the local police, Fire and Emergency Services, and district administration rushed to the site. Rescue and relief operations were launched to secure the area, search for survivors, and assess the extent of damage caused by the blast. Medical assistance was provided to the injured individual, who was shifted to a nearby hospital.

Authorities said the challenging terrain and hazardous conditions inside the mine are complicating rescue efforts. Heavy equipment and specialised personnel have been deployed to speed up operations while ensuring the safety of rescue workers.

Reacting to the incident, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma ordered a detailed inquiry to ascertain the cause of the blast and fix responsibility. He directed officials to submit a comprehensive report and emphasised the need for strict action to prevent such incidents in the future.

Meghalaya Member of Parliament Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He reiterated concerns over the continued prevalence of illegal mining in the region and called for stronger enforcement to protect workers’ lives.

Illegal coal mining, particularly rat-hole mining, has long been a contentious issue in Meghalaya. Despite bans and regulatory measures imposed over the years, such activities continue to operate clandestinely, often exposing workers to extreme risks due to poor ventilation, lack of safety protocols and the absence of emergency mechanisms.

The latest tragedy has once again brought the spotlight on enforcement gaps and the urgent need for sustainable and legal mining alternatives in the state. Officials said rescue operations will continue until all missing persons are accounted for.
