West Indies defeated Bangladesh by 7 wickets in the second match of the ongoing three-match ODI series in St. Kitts, securing their first ODI series win against Bangladesh in 10 years. With this victory, West Indies sealed the series, having already taken a 1-0 lead with a remarkable win in the first match, where they ended Bangladesh’s 11-match winning streak.
The star of the match was West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales, who delivered a career-best performance, claiming 4 wickets for just 22 runs. His fiery bowling restricted Bangladesh to a modest total of 227 runs in 45.5 overs. Seales made an early breakthrough, removing three key wickets, and was instrumental in putting Bangladesh on the back foot. His brilliant spell, along with the support from Gudakesh Motie, who took 2 wickets for 36 runs, helped put the pressure on the Bangladeshi batsmen.
Bangladesh’s resistance came in the form of a gritty partnership between Mahmudullah and Tanzim Hasan, who put together a record-breaking 92-run stand for the eighth wicket, which helped push the team past 200 runs. This stand became a new record for the highest eighth-wicket partnership for Bangladesh in ODIs. Tanzim scored 45 runs off 62 balls before being dismissed by Roston Chase, while Mahmudullah, who was the top scorer for Bangladesh, played a composed innings of 62 runs off 74 balls. However, his dismissal followed soon after, as he was caught at deep point off Seales’ wide delivery.
Chasing a target of 228 runs, West Indies made a flying start, with five boundaries in the first seven overs. Despite a small setback with the loss of their first wicket at 109 in the 21st over, West Indies continued their chase with confidence. Evin Lewis, who had been part of a century-opening partnership earlier this year, was dismissed for 49 runs off 62 balls. However, Brandon King continued his strong form, making 82 runs off 76 balls, helping West Indies approach their target comfortably.
The victory was sealed by captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford, who played patient, unbeaten knocks to guide the team across the line. Hope contributed 17 runs from 21 balls, while Rutherford remained not out with 24 runs off 15 balls. The win marked West Indies’ first ODI series victory over Bangladesh in a decade, as they took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
