Former Australian captain Mark Taylor has raised concerns about Mohammad Siraj’s on-field celebrations, specifically questioning his habit of celebrating wickets before the umpire’s decision. Taylor, 60, criticized Siraj’s eagerness to celebrate dismissals, stating that he often runs towards his teammates in excitement before the official call is made. Taylor suggested that senior players in the Indian team should have a conversation with Siraj to address the issue, as such behavior can be seen as disrespectful.
In an interview with Nine News, Taylor expressed his discomfort with Siraj’s premature celebrations, especially when the bowler assumes he has taken a wicket but the umpire has yet to make a decision. Taylor pointed out that Siraj’s actions do not reflect well on him or the game, despite the bowler’s competitive spirit and enthusiasm. He said, “I like his energy, I like his competitive nature, but there’s also respect for the game that needs to be maintained.”
Siraj’s aggressive celebrations have previously come under scrutiny. The Indian pacer was fined 20% of his match fee for his conduct during an incident involving Australian batsman Travis Head. During this incident, Siraj celebrated aggressively after dismissing Head in the second Test of the series, which led to an ICC penalty. Taylor believes that Siraj’s senior teammates should guide him in understanding the importance of waiting for the umpire’s decision before celebrating.
Former Australian cricketer Simon Katich also weighed in on the issue, commenting on Siraj’s lapse in judgment during the incident. Katich said that Siraj’s behavior was regrettable, stating, “His mind didn’t work for a moment, and he later regretted it. There’s no need for such behavior in the game.”
The controversy surrounding Siraj’s actions follows a heated exchange between him and Head during the Adelaide Test, where Siraj bowled Head out after the latter hit him for a six. Following Head’s dismissal, Siraj gestured for Head to go to the dressing room, leading to some words exchanged between the two. After the match, Head claimed he was merely complimenting Siraj, but Siraj accused him of lying.
Australia went on to win the Adelaide Test by 10 wickets, leveling the series 1-1 after India’s victory in the Perth Test. The third match of the series will take place in Brisbane on December 14.
