In a landmark move, Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to pass the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill 2024, signaling a significant step towards legal uniformity and equality among its residents.
The historic bill was approved by the Uttarakhand Assembly and was announced by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Expressing his elation, the Chief Minister stated, “Today is a special day for Uttarakhand… The bill which had been long awaited, for which there had been a demand for a long time has been passed in the Uttarakhand Assembly…”
Chief Minister Dhami also took to Twitter to extend gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the passage of the bill. He expressed heartfelt appreciation to the honorable members of the Uttarakhand legislature, the committee responsible for drafting the UCC, and the people of Devbhoomi for their unwavering support.
With this historic move, Uttarakhand sets a precedent as the first state to implement the UCC Bill, aiming to establish uniform civil laws applicable to all communities within the state, irrespective of caste or religion. The proposed UCC seeks to provide a standardized legal framework governing various aspects of civil life, including marriage, divorce, land ownership, property rights, and inheritance laws for Uttarakhand’s residents.
