The Supreme Court has granted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) an extension to vacate its Rouse Avenue party office until August 10. This decision follows an application filed by the AAP, requesting more time beyond the previous deadline of June 15.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing the AAP, presented their case before a vacation bench comprising justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta. Taking note of the submissions, the bench extended the deadline.
“Considering facts and circumstances of the case, as the last opportunity, we extend the time granted by earlier order till August 10, 2024 on undertaking by the applicant within week from today before the registry that they will hand over peaceful possession of property,” the Supreme Court stated.
The AAP is seeking space allocation for its office from the Centre, citing its recognition as a national party.
Earlier, on March 4, the top court had directed the party to vacate its office by June 15, noting that the plot was allotted to the Delhi High Court for expanding judicial infrastructure.
The bench specified that the AAP must hand over possession of the building at 206, Rouse Avenue, on or before August 10.
“Every year our building costs are being escalated. Till August, the court may consider, but not more,” Delhi HC counsel remarked.
“Whatever politics is between the Centre and them. We have a shortage of 90 courtroom,” it added.
