US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hailed the India-US agreement to jointly produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force as “revolutionary” during testimony to lawmakers on Wednesday.
The historic deal, announced last June during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Official State Visit to the US, saw General Electric signing a memorandum of understanding with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to manufacture fighter jet engines for the IAF.
Speaking before the House Appropriations Subcommittee, Austin emphasized the strong relationship between the United States and India. He highlighted the recent milestone of enabling India to domestically produce jet engines, a development he described as “revolutionary” and providing a significant capability boost to the Indian armed forces.
Lloyd Austin further noted collaborative efforts between the two countries, including the co-production of an armored vehicle. He emphasized that these initiatives represent a substantial advancement in regional cooperation, exceeding previous developments in the area.
The remarks underscore the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States, with defense cooperation playing a key role in strengthening bilateral ties.
