In a stark revelation, a recent study conducted by the United Nations has shed light on the alarming rate of food wastage globally. According to the Food Waste Index Report released on Wednesday, households worldwide discarded a staggering one billion meals each day in the year 2022.
Published by the UN, this comprehensive report underscores the severity of the issue, particularly in light of the fact that over 780 million people worldwide are grappling with hunger. The study highlights that not only are households and businesses discarding food, but they also squandered more than one trillion dollars’ worth of edible items.
The index serves as a tool to monitor the progress of countries striving to halve food waste by 2030. It reveals that in 2022 alone, more than one billion tonnes of food—nearly one-fifth of the total produce available—was wasted, with households being the primary contributors to this alarming trend.
In a statement, Inger Andersen, the executive director of the UN Environment Programme, lamented the global tragedy of food waste, emphasizing that millions suffer from hunger while food is unnecessarily discarded.
Moreover, the report highlights the environmental repercussions of such wasteful practices, labeling them not just as moral failures but also as significant environmental ones. Food loss and waste reportedly account for 8 to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, ranking third globally if considered as a separate entity after China and the United States.
Co-authored with the non-profit organization WRAP, this report represents the second comprehensive assessment of global food waste by the UN, offering the most detailed insights to date. However, the report suggests that the figure of one billion meals discarded daily is likely a conservative estimate, indicating that the actual extent of food wastage could be even higher.
The findings underscore the urgent need for concerted efforts at both individual and collective levels to address this pressing issue and ensure more responsible consumption and utilization of food resources globally.
