The Congress party has chosen Kishori Lal Sharma as its candidate from Amethi to contest against BJP’s Smriti Irani in the upcoming elections.
Kishori Lal Sharma, a seasoned politician with over four decades of association with the Congress, is known for his close ties to the Gandhi family. Originally from Ludhiana, Punjab, Kishori Lal Sharma began his political journey alongside Rajiv Gandhi in 1983, establishing a strong presence in Rae Bareli and Amethi.
Following Rajiv Gandhi’s passing in 1991, Kishori Lal Sharma’s connection with the Gandhi family deepened, and he took on a pivotal role in overseeing the affairs of the two constituencies in their absence.
Renowned for his frequent visits and active involvement in constituency matters, Kishori Lal Sharma accompanied Sonia Gandhi on her entry into politics, particularly during her initial visits to Amethi.
It’s widely believed that Kishori Lal Sharma played a significant role in managing both Amethi and Rae Bareli after Sonia Gandhi relinquished the Amethi seat to Rahul Gandhi, who subsequently contested from Rae Bareli.
Kishori Lal Sharma, alongside Rahul Gandhi, will submit his nomination papers on Friday, marking the final date for nominations in both constituencies. Amethi and Rae Bareli are slated to vote on May 20 during the fifth phase of the general elections.
