The loss of ten Indian Army personnel in a devastating road accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district has once again drawn attention to the extreme dangers faced by soldiers during routine operational movements in mountainous terrain.
An Army vehicle carrying 21 soldiers plunged nearly 400 feet into a deep gorge on Thursday while travelling on an interstate mountain route in Doda district. The accident occurred around noon on a stretch of road notorious for sharp bends, narrow passages, and hazardous winter conditions. According to officials, the vehicle skidded on an icy section of the road, causing the driver to lose control before it veered off the edge and fell into the gorge.
Ten soldiers succumbed to their injuries, while eleven others were seriously injured in the crash. Army sources confirmed that all personnel on board were accounted for. Rescue operations were launched immediately, despite difficult terrain and weather challenges. Army helicopters were deployed to evacuate the injured, highlighting the urgency and scale of the response.
The injured soldiers were airlifted to the Command Hospital in Udhampur for advanced medical treatment. Of the eleven injured, six were admitted to a medical facility in Kishtwar for further care, while the remaining five were transferred to Udhampur due to the severity of their injuries. Senior Army officials are closely monitoring the condition of the wounded soldiers.
Response from authorities and ongoing security challenges
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. In a statement, he said he was profoundly saddened by the accident and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers. He emphasized that the entire nation stands in solidarity with the bereaved families during this difficult time.
The Lieutenant Governor added that senior officials have been instructed to ensure the injured soldiers receive the best possible medical care. He also prayed for their speedy recovery, acknowledging the sacrifices made by the armed forces while serving in challenging environments.
The accident comes at a time when security forces in the region remain on high alert due to ongoing counter-terrorism operations. Just days earlier, on January 18, a fierce encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists during a search operation in Kishtwar district. Eight soldiers were injured during the exchange of fire. One of them, Havildar Gajendra Singh, later succumbed to his injuries on January 19, underscoring the persistent risks faced by personnel deployed in the region.
Jammu and Kashmir continues to witness a complex security situation, where soldiers must balance operational readiness with the dangers posed by difficult geography and unpredictable weather. The combination of high-altitude postings, narrow mountain roads, and winter conditions significantly increases the risk of accidents during troop movements.
Series of deadly accidents underscore recurring dangers
The Doda tragedy is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing pattern of fatal accidents involving Army vehicles in mountainous regions over recent years. On December 24, 2024, five soldiers lost their lives when an Army van carrying 18 personnel fell into a 350-foot-deep gorge in Poonch district. The soldiers, belonging to the 11 Maratha Regiment, were travelling as part of a convoy of six vehicles along an operational track leading to Banoi. Officials reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to plunge into the gorge.
In November 2024, two separate road accidents claimed the lives of five soldiers. On November 4, two soldiers were killed in a road accident in Rajouri district. Just two days earlier, on November 2, three soldiers died when their vehicle fell into a gorge in Reasi district. Both incidents occurred on narrow mountain roads where visibility and road conditions were poor.
Earlier incidents further highlight the severity of the issue. On August 19, 2023, an Army vehicle in Ladakh fell into a 60-foot-deep gorge, killing nine soldiers. The convoy consisted of five vehicles carrying 34 soldiers. One soldier was injured in the crash. Local police officials stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle while navigating a difficult stretch of road.
Another tragic incident occurred on April 29, 2023, when an Army ambulance skidded off a road in the Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir and plunged into a 200-foot-deep gorge. Two soldiers were killed, and two others sustained injuries. The accident took place near the Line of Actual Control, an area marked by steep terrain and limited road infrastructure.
One of the deadliest such accidents occurred on December 23, 2022, in Sikkim’s Jema area, when an Army truck fell into a gorge after slipping at a sharp turn. Sixteen soldiers were killed, and the vehicle was completely torn apart due to the impact. Two additional Army vans were travelling alongside the truck at the time. Rescue teams managed to airlift four injured soldiers to a hospital for treatment.
These repeated tragedies underline the persistent hazards of military logistics and movement in India’s mountainous border regions. Despite strict protocols, experienced drivers, and regular safety briefings, the unpredictable nature of terrain and weather continues to pose life-threatening challenges. Each incident renews calls for improved infrastructure, enhanced safety measures, and technological support to reduce risks during troop transportation.
