The Election Commission of India (ECI) has firmly rejected fresh allegations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about alleged manipulation in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections. Terming the accusations “completely absurd,” the poll body stated that such claims disregard facts already made public and pose a direct threat to the integrity of democratic institutions. The controversy has triggered a sharp political backlash, with the BJP accusing Gandhi of attempting to undermine confidence in the electoral system ahead of key state elections.
Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Rigged Democracy’ Allegations
Rahul Gandhi, currently the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, took to social media platform X to allege that the Maharashtra elections were an orchestrated attempt to subvert democracy. He described the process as “match-fixing,” claiming it would be replicated in Bihar and any other state where the BJP faces defeat. Gandhi outlined a stepwise method of alleged rigging — fake voter additions, inflated turnout, facilitation of bogus voting, and cover-up of evidence — suggesting a systematic blueprint to manipulate outcomes. He warned that such tactics harm institutions and erode public trust, even if they secure a win for one side.
ECI’s Strong Rebuttal
In response, the ECI called the claims baseless and pointed out that all related facts had already been addressed in its official reply to the Congress on December 24, 2024 — a document that remains publicly accessible on the Commission’s website. “Unsubstantiated allegations against Maharashtra’s electoral rolls are an affront to the rule of law,” the Commission said, adding that it appeared these facts were being deliberately ignored.
The poll body also emphasized the impact such allegations have on the morale of thousands of election staff and political party-appointed representatives who work tirelessly to uphold electoral transparency. According to ECI sources quoted by PTI, casting doubt on the institution after an unfavorable verdict is not only misleading but undermines democratic processes. They stressed that spreading misinformation demotivates ground-level workers and damages the credibility of free and fair elections.
As the political debate intensifies, the ECI’s firm stance underscores its resolve to defend institutional integrity amid ongoing scrutiny from opposition parties and public discourse.
