A devastating incident unfolded on Friday in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district as a boat, carrying approximately 50 passengers, capsized in the Mahanadi river, resulting in the loss of at least four lives. As rescue efforts persist into Saturday, the grim task of locating missing individuals continues.
Confirming the distressing toll, senior police officer Chintamani Pradhan disclosed to India Today TV that seven individuals remain unaccounted for following the tragic accident.
The ill-fated boat was en route from Bargarh district’s Bandhipali area when it encountered turbulent waters, leading to its capsizing near Saradha Ghat in Jharsuguda.
Addressing the press late on Friday, District Collector Kartikeya Goyal revealed that the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), in collaboration with the Jharsuguda district administration and state authorities, is diligently conducting search operations to locate the missing persons.
“We have been informed that scuba divers will be dispatched from Bhubaneshwar to augment our search efforts. Presently, our priority is to safely repatriate the 48 rescued individuals to their respective villages,” stated Goyal from the accident site.
Despite the challenges posed by nighttime conditions, Goyal emphasized the resilience of the ODRAF divers, noting their proficiency and equipped readiness for nocturnal operations. Additional support in the form of a scuba diving team is anticipated upon their arrival.
Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a compensation package of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased, offering solace amidst the tragedy.
In the wake of the incident, allegations have emerged regarding the boat’s legality and adherence to safety standards. Local BJP leader Suresh Pujari raised concerns over the vessel’s operation without a valid license or fitness certificate, highlighting the absence of a lifeguard and overcapacity as contributing factors.
District authorities have pledged a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, underscoring the imperative for accountability and preventive measures to avert similar calamities in the future.
