In a significant breakthrough, Punjab Police arrested three individuals in connection with the murder of Shiv Sena leader Mangat Rai in Moga district. The arrests were made after a brief exchange of fire between the accused and the police in Malout, located in Muktsar district, officials confirmed on Saturday.
Mangat Rai, the Moga district president of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, was fatally shot late Thursday night. The incident also left a 12-year-old boy injured, as he was struck by a stray bullet during the attack.
According to police reports, the 52-year-old leader had stepped out of his home around 10 PM to purchase groceries when he was ambushed by three unidentified assailants. The first shot missed its intended target but hit the young boy who happened to be in the line of fire. Sensing the danger, Rai attempted to escape on his two-wheeler, but the attackers chased him down and fired multiple rounds. One of the bullets struck him fatally.
Rai was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by the police, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. Meanwhile, the injured child was given medical attention and is currently recovering.
Authorities suspect that personal enmity might have played a role in the murder. However, Rai’s family members have refuted this claim, stating that he had no known enemies and was not involved in any disputes. The investigation is ongoing, with police exploring all possible motives behind the killing.
The Punjab Police acted swiftly following the murder, launching a manhunt to track down the assailants. Their efforts led them to Malout, where the suspects were cornered. In an attempt to evade arrest, the accused opened fire on the police, prompting officers to retaliate. Following a brief shootout, all three suspects were overpowered and taken into custody. No police personnel sustained injuries during the operation.
The incident has sent shockwaves across political and social circles in Punjab, with leaders from various parties condemning the attack and calling for strict action against the perpetrators. Law enforcement agencies are now intensifying efforts to determine whether the accused had any larger affiliations or if the crime was an isolated act of violence.
As investigations continue, police officials are gathering evidence, including CCTV footage from the area, witness statements, and forensic reports to build a strong case against the accused. Authorities have assured that justice will be served, and the individuals responsible for Rai’s murder will face the full force of the law.
