Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized dialogue over conflict in his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a crucial bilateral meeting in Moscow. According to media reports, PM Narendra Modi reiterated India’s commitment to resolving the Ukraine crisis through peaceful means, stressing that military action would not provide a lasting solution to longstanding issues.

The meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin comes amidst heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first visit to Russia since the conflict erupted in 2022. This diplomatic push follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 summit, underscoring India’s active role in seeking peaceful resolutions to global conflicts.

A significant outcome of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit was Russia’s agreement to release Indian nationals who had been recruited to participate in the Ukraine conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue firmly, expressing concern over the welfare of these individuals and ensuring their safe return to India.

During the visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in extensive discussions with President Russian President Vladimir Putin, spanning approximately 8-9 hours, covering various bilateral and strategic issues. This included private conversations as well as official talks during an official breakfast session.

The economic agenda featured prominently in the discussions, with efforts aimed at reducing the trade imbalance exacerbated by increased energy imports from Russia in recent years. The annual India-Russia summit, a pivotal platform for bilateral dialogue, witnessed both leaders reaffirming their commitment through the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements.

The warmth between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin was evident during informal interactions at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence, where they discussed various topics over tea and a ride in a golf cart. Russian President Vladimir Putin commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and achievements for India, highlighting their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hospitality and looked forward to deepening the longstanding friendship between India and Russia. Following his visit to Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Austria, marking a significant diplomatic engagement in Central Europe after over four decades.

The discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin underscore India’s proactive diplomatic stance in promoting peace and stability in the region, emphasizing dialogue and mutual respect for international laws and sovereignty.
