Thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are facing yet another wave of displacement as the Israeli military issues new evacuation orders. The orders, which now affect several areas including Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and the Al-Maghazi refugee camp, are further exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
Residents were seen leaving their homes in a desperate search for safety. Some traveled by donkey carts or in private vehicles loaded with their belongings, while others walked with essential items like mattresses, blankets, and water. Streets in affected areas were strewn with leaflets from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reiterating the evacuation mandates.
The IDF’s latest actions come after a series of strikes targeting Hezbollah weapons storage facilities in Lebanon, which have heightened tensions in the region. The Lebanese health ministry reported that these strikes have resulted in at least one death and 30 injuries.
The ongoing conflict has led to a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with many residents experiencing repeated displacements. Those fleeing from Deir al-Balah, for example, describe an overwhelming sense of fear and uncertainty. One evacuee, Muhammad Awad, spoke of the constant bombardment and a lack of safe places to go. Another elderly man lamented that there are no longer any places left to flee, expressing deep fear about their future.
The situation is compounded by a steadily shrinking “humanitarian zone,” which has decreased by 38% in the past month alone, leaving the remaining area as only a fraction of Gaza’s total land. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has reported that nearly 84% of the enclave is now under evacuation orders. This reduction in safe zones is making it increasingly difficult for humanitarian organizations to deliver aid.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has condemned the forced displacements as inhumane, highlighting the dire lack of resources, overcrowding, and inadequate sanitation. According to MSF project coordinator Jacob Granger, the severe conditions are fueling the spread of diseases and leaving people with no belongings or place to go.
As the situation deteriorates, international efforts to mediate a ceasefire continue. US and Israeli leaders are engaged in discussions, with President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken seeking potential agreements on a ceasefire and hostage release. However, disagreements over the control of the Philadelphi corridor and other strategic areas remain significant obstacles.
The conflict has resulted in a staggering death toll, with Gaza’s Health Ministry estimating over 40,000 fatalities since the war began. The UN has estimated that up to 1.9 million people have been displaced, highlighting the profound impact of the ongoing violence on the civilian population.
