Hezbollah launched a series of rockets at the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights following Israeli airstrikes deep into Lebanese territory, escalating tensions and fears of a broader regional conflict. The Israeli military confirmed strikes on Hezbollah weapons storage facilities in the Bekaa Valley overnight, leading to significant casualties. The Lebanese health ministry reported one death and thirty injuries from these strikes.
In retaliation, Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, targeted Israeli military positions in the Golan Heights with a barrage of rockets. Israeli authorities reported that two homes were damaged and one person was injured in the rocket attacks. This latest escalation follows a recent surge in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, exacerbated by a series of cross-border confrontations.
The Israeli military’s actions were reportedly aimed at preempting further attacks, as Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized that the focus of military operations was shifting from Gaza to the Lebanese border. The recent strikes included targeting Hezbollah facilities in the northern Bekaa Valley and a compound used for air defense systems.
Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed casualties from the airstrikes, including a man killed and nine children among the thirty injured. Hezbollah also reported the death of a fighter, Hussein Mostafa, in the village of Beit Lif. In response to the airstrikes, Hezbollah launched approximately fifty rockets at an Israeli logistics base in Katzrin, a settlement in the Golan Heights. The rockets caused injuries and property damage, with one man moderately wounded by shrapnel.
Hezbollah further escalated the situation by conducting a drone attack on Israeli military bases and warehouses near the Sea of Galilee. While some drones were downed without causing casualties, the attacks underscored the heightened military tensions.
Additionally, a significant development occurred with the Israeli drone strike that killed Khalil al-Makdah, a senior member of the Palestinian Fatah movement. The strike targeted al-Makdah in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon. The Fatah movement condemned the assassination, claiming it was a deliberate attempt by Israel to incite regional conflict.
Fatah’s al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades confirmed al-Makdah’s death, describing him as a leader in the West Bank. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) asserted that al-Makdah was involved in terrorist activities and collaborated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Israeli officials maintained that the actions were necessary to address threats against the safety and security of Israel.
The ongoing violence and military actions highlight the deepening regional instability, with increasing concerns about the potential for a wider conflict involving multiple actors in the Middle East.
