A Tennessee police officer faces multiple charges after allegedly shooting seven dogs during an animal welfare check at a Bethel Springs home. Connor Brackin, a former deputy with the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested and charged with seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and eight counts of reckless endangerment following the November 4 incident.

The case unfolded when Brackin responded to a welfare check call about dogs allegedly being malnourished and abandoned. The animals belonged to Kevin Dismuke and his wife, who had gone out for dinner. According to the couple, they returned to a devastating scene—three of their dogs were shot dead inside their house, while four others were killed outside.

“To step out of your car with a .223 caliber rifle and shoot through my damn house,” said an emotional Dismuke in an interview with Fox 13 Memphis, expressing disbelief and grief over the tragedy. The couple vehemently denied the accusations of neglect, asserting that their pets were neither malnourished nor abandoned. “I don’t know where they came up with the idea that they were malnourished or abandoned,” Dismuke added. “Why he pulled up and done what he done, that’s something I don’t have an answer for. I’ll never have an answer for it.”

According to authorities, Brackin used a rifle to fire at the dogs, both inside and outside the property, without apparent justification. His actions prompted immediate outrage and legal consequences. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Tuesday, and Brackin surrendered to authorities the following day. He was subsequently released on bond.

At the time of the incident, Brackin had been employed with the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office for less than a month. Following the incident, he was dismissed from his position. The charges against him include seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, highlighting the egregious nature of the killings, and eight counts of reckless endangerment, reflecting the potential danger posed to others by his actions.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and raised serious questions about the misuse of authority in animal welfare cases. The Dismuke family, still reeling from the loss of their beloved pets, has called for accountability and justice. Meanwhile, the case continues to draw attention to the need for stricter oversight and training for law enforcement officers in handling animal welfare calls.
