Amid growing speculation over the revival of the alliance between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), AIADMK general secretary and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence on Tuesday. The meeting comes at a crucial time as Tamil Nadu gears up for its upcoming assembly elections, signaling a possible political realignment in the state.
According to sources, the discussions between Edappadi K Palaniswami and Amit Shah covered a wide range of issues, including the alleged imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu. Edappadi K Palaniswami reportedly conveyed his party’s concerns regarding linguistic and cultural sensitivities in the state. While no official confirmation has been made regarding an electoral alliance, the meeting has fueled speculation about a potential reunion between AIADMK and BJP after their split in 2023.
The AIADMK had severed ties with the BJP in September 2023, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, following differences with the saffron party’s state leadership. The decision to break away was reportedly influenced by the aggressive political stance of Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai. AIADMK leaders had sought either an apology from Annamalai over his remarks on Dravidian stalwart C N Annadurai or his removal from the position, which did not materialize.
Since the split, political dynamics in Tamil Nadu have continued to evolve. Annamalai, known for his outspoken criticism of AIADMK, has recently toned down his rhetoric, leading to speculation that a reconciliation might be in the works. The AIADMK, which has witnessed a gradual decline in its vote share over the years, is reportedly considering all options to strengthen its position ahead of the assembly elections.
Political analysts suggest that a renewed AIADMK-BJP alliance could pose a formidable challenge to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led INDIA bloc in the state. The BJP, despite its limited electoral influence in Tamil Nadu, has been striving to expand its foothold, and an alliance with AIADMK could provide the much-needed leverage to take on the DMK.
While the meeting between Edappadi K Palaniswami and Amit Shah has sparked fresh political debates, both parties have remained tight-lipped about any formal alliance agreement. AIADMK’s next course of action will likely depend on how negotiations unfold in the coming weeks, setting the stage for an intense political battle in Tamil Nadu.
