Dhaka: Bangladesh’s prime minister-in-waiting Tarique Rahman on Saturday dedicated his party’s sweeping electoral victory to citizens who “sacrificed for democracy” during the violent 2024 uprising, while pledging to restore governance, stabilise the economy, and repair what he described as “broken systems.”
Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a commanding mandate in the country’s first general election since the student-led uprising that led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The vote marked a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s political transition following months of uncertainty under an interim administration.
In his first public address after the election, Rahman framed the outcome as a victory for democratic aspirations rather than a partisan triumph.
“This victory belongs to Bangladesh, belongs to democracy,” Rahman said. “This victory belongs to people who aspire to and have sacrificed for democracy.”
BNP Alliance Secures Two-Thirds Majority
According to the Election Commission, the BNP-led alliance won 212 seats, achieving a decisive two-thirds majority in parliament. The Jamaat-i-Islami-led alliance secured 77 seats. Voter turnout was reported at 59 per cent across 299 constituencies.
The result represents a significant political comeback for Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh in December after 17 years of exile in Britain.
Analysts view the BNP’s majority as a crucial opportunity to restore political stability following years of political turbulence and institutional strain.
Transition From Interim Government
Rahman is expected to assume leadership from the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, which has governed Bangladesh since the 2024 uprising.
The interim administration oversaw both the election and a concurrent referendum on democratic reforms aimed at strengthening constitutional safeguards.
Focus on Governance and Economy
Despite celebrating the electoral mandate, Rahman emphasised the scale of challenges facing the incoming government.
“We are about to begin our journey in a situation marked by a fragile economy left behind by an authoritarian regime, weakening constitutional and structural institutions, and destroying law and order,” Rahman stated.
He identified economic stabilisation, governance reforms, and restoration of institutional credibility as immediate priorities.
“We have very serious challenges to face … tackle the economy of the country … to ensure good governance,” he added.
Democratic Reform Charter Approved
Voters also endorsed a sweeping democratic reform charter backed by the interim government through a referendum held alongside the election.
The approved reforms include:
- Prime ministerial term limits
- Creation of a new upper house of parliament
- Enhanced presidential powers
- Greater judicial independence
The measures are designed to prevent a return to one-party dominance and reinforce democratic checks and balances.
Opposition and Political Reactions
Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League was barred from contesting the election. Hasina, currently in hiding in India and sentenced to death in absentia for crimes against humanity, criticised the polls as “illegal and unconstitutional.”
Meanwhile, Jamaat-i-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman, whose party significantly expanded its parliamentary presence, conceded the results after initially raising concerns about alleged inconsistencies.
He pledged to act as a “vigilant, principled, and peaceful opposition.”
Call for National Unity
Rahman urged political parties to work collectively in the national interest.
“Our paths and opinions may differ, but in the interest of the country, we must remain united,” he said.
Political Legacy and Scrutiny
Rahman, 60, is the son of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who died last year. While critics have previously raised allegations of corruption — charges Rahman has denied — the scale of the BNP’s victory signals strong electoral backing.
Observers note that Rahman’s tenure will be closely watched as Bangladesh seeks to consolidate democratic reforms and restore economic stability after a period of significant political upheaval.
