In a tragic turn of events, Captain Deepak Singh was killed in action during an encounter with terrorists in the Assar area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Wednesday. The clash occurred during a cordon-and-search operation launched by a joint security team to locate a group of four terrorists hiding in the Shivgarh-Assar belt. A civilian was also injured in the exchange of fire.

The operation, which began in the forested area late Tuesday night, continued into Wednesday morning. Sources reported that one of the terrorists was wounded, and security forces recovered a United States-made M4 assault rifle and three blood-soaked rucksacks containing equipment and logistics from the encounter site.

The Army expressed its deepest condolences to Captain Singh’s family. The incident comes just a day before India’s Independence Day, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to review the security situation with senior officials, including Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

The rising wave of terrorism in the Jammu region, particularly in the southern Pir Panjal range, has raised concerns about the resurgence of militancy. Recent months have seen a spike in terror activities, prompting the government to implement a new security matrix aimed at countering increased attacks on civilians and military personnel.

Former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed sorrow over Captain Singh’s death, criticizing the continued violence in the region despite claims of normalcy by the administration. She offered her deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

In addition to the recent incident in Doda, there have been several other attacks in the region. Earlier this month, two soldiers were killed in an encounter in Anantnag district, and last month, a soldier was killed in Kupwara district. The increase in military casualties has prompted a reassessment of security measures, focusing on countering cross-border infiltration and enhancing human intelligence and tactical efficiency.

As the nation prepares for Independence Day celebrations, the ongoing violence and the loss of lives underscore the enduring challenges in Jammu and Kashmir.
