In a significant political engagement ahead of the upcoming Vice Presidential election scheduled for September 9, INDIA bloc’s candidate Sudershan Reddy met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin in Chennai on Sunday, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the Constitution, democratic principles, and liberal values. Sudershan Reddy, who will contest against NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan, presented himself as a constitutional democrat with a clear vision for safeguarding India’s democratic institutions while emphasizing the importance of federalism and the protection of state interests. The meeting with MK Stalin reflected a mutual acknowledgment of shared priorities, particularly in defending constitutional values and ensuring that governance remains inclusive, transparent, and responsive to citizen needs. Sudershan Reddy underscored that his candidacy represents a principled stand in the current political climate, focusing on justice, equality, and adherence to the rule of law, rather than partisan politics or personal ambition.

Commitment to Constitutional Democracy and Liberal Values

During his interaction with the media and in his discussions with MK Stalin, Sudershan Reddy described himself as “a liberal and constitutional democrat,” reiterating his faith in the Indian Constitution as the supreme guide for all governance and legal frameworks in the country. Emphasizing his long-standing career as a judge, Sudershan Reddy stated that his decisions have always reflected allegiance to constitutional values, judicial independence, and the principles of justice. While he refrained from commenting on his opponent, CP Radhakrishnan, he highlighted that the Vice Presidential contest is an opportunity for the electorate to choose a candidate who embodies decency, integrity, and commitment to democratic norms.

Sudershan Reddy’s emphasis on liberalism was coupled with a strong advocacy for constitutional protections, arguing that India’s democracy depends on leaders who uphold institutional checks and balances rather than yield to political pressures. He noted that defending the Constitution requires vigilance against attempts to undermine democratic institutions, judicial autonomy, and citizen rights. In this context, Sudershan Reddy positioned himself as a defender of civil liberties and democratic values, asserting that his experience in the judiciary equips him to interpret and uphold constitutional mandates without bias.

MK Stalin’s endorsement of Sudershan Reddy reinforced these principles, presenting him as a credible candidate who can protect constitutional governance at a time when political discourse often challenges legal and institutional norms. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister praised Sudershan Reddy for his decades-long service to justice and his reputation for integrity, describing him as a guardian of democracy and an advocate for principled governance. According to MK Stalin, Sudershan Reddy’s candidacy is essential in the current political scenario, particularly given concerns about attempts by certain political forces to weaken institutional safeguards and infringe on constitutional freedoms. MK Stalin emphasized that Sudershan Reddy’s record demonstrates a consistent commitment to fairness, rule of law, and respect for democratic institutions, making him a suitable representative for the Vice Presidential office.

Sudershan Reddy, in his statements, also reflected on his approach to public service, stating that his work as a judge was motivated by the pursuit of justice and the protection of citizen rights, rather than personal accolades or political gain. He highlighted that his decisions have always been grounded in constitutional interpretation, human rights considerations, and social equity. Addressing the media, he underscored that his role in public life would continue to prioritize safeguarding constitutional norms, ensuring equitable governance, and defending the democratic framework that sustains India’s pluralistic society.

Federalism, Tamil Nadu Connection, and Governance Priorities

A notable aspect of Sudershan Reddy’s discussion with MK Stalin was the emphasis on federalism and state rights. Sudershan Reddy acknowledged MK Stalin’s leadership in promoting state autonomy and respecting regional concerns, particularly in policy areas such as education, social development, and economic planning. He emphasized that effective federalism is essential for balancing national priorities with local realities, ensuring that governance is responsive to citizens’ needs across diverse regions. By highlighting the importance of respecting Tamil Nadu’s cultural, social, and political context, Reddy positioned himself as a candidate attuned to federal principles and regional sensitivities, reinforcing the relevance of cooperative governance between the Union and state governments.

Sudershan Reddy also praised Tamil Nadu’s achievements in human development, healthcare, education, and socio-economic policies, describing the state as a model for other regions in India. He pointed out that Tamil Nadu’s consistent leadership in the Human Development Index, as well as its innovative approaches to social welfare, exemplifies the positive impact of governance rooted in inclusivity, transparency, and citizen-centered policy-making. Sudershan Reddy emphasized that as Vice President, he would remain mindful of regional perspectives while upholding the Constitution, ensuring that national governance accommodates state concerns and respects local identities.

The Vice Presidential candidate also outlined his priorities if elected, reiterating his commitment to protecting the Constitution, defending democratic institutions, and promoting federal principles. He stressed that India’s governance requires leaders who can navigate complex political and social dynamics without compromising on legal or ethical standards. Sudershan Reddy highlighted the importance of judicial independence, the rule of law, and the separation of powers as critical components of a resilient democracy. Furthermore, he emphasized that dialogue, reasoned debate, and adherence to constitutional values must guide public decision-making, ensuring that governance remains accountable, equitable, and just.

MK Stalin’s remarks during the meeting reinforced these ideas, framing Sudershan Reddy’s candidacy as essential for countering attempts to erode constitutional safeguards. MK Stalin argued that political forces attempting to undermine democratic norms necessitate the election of leaders who prioritize institutional integrity and the protection of citizen rights. By endorsing Sudershan Reddy, MK Stalin highlighted the alignment of shared democratic values, including transparency, accountability, and respect for pluralism. The Chief Minister also noted Sudershan Reddy’s understanding of Tamil Nadu’s unique political and cultural concerns, stressing that his respect for the state’s priorities underscores the importance of federalism in India’s governance structure.

Sudershan Reddy’s discussion also touched upon the symbolic and practical significance of the Vice Presidential role, emphasizing that the office serves as a custodian of parliamentary procedures, a protector of constitutional norms, and an arbiter of legislative processes. By underscoring the responsibilities associated with the position, Sudershan Reddy presented his candidacy as a continuation of his lifelong commitment to justice, constitutional adherence, and the protection of democratic institutions. He argued that the Vice President must act with impartiality, integrity, and foresight, safeguarding India’s democratic framework while facilitating constructive legislative engagement.

Throughout the interaction, Sudershan Reddy maintained a consistent focus on liberal values, constitutional fidelity, and principled governance. His engagement with MK Stalin highlighted the convergence of shared priorities, including federalism, citizen welfare, and institutional integrity. Sudershan Reddy’s statements reflected his intent to prioritize the Constitution above political partisanship, ensuring that the office of the Vice President remains a stabilizing force in India’s democratic system.

Sudershan Reddy’s meeting with MK Stalin underscored his identity as a liberal, constitutional democrat committed to protecting India’s democratic institutions, promoting federalism, and respecting regional concerns. His candidacy for the Vice Presidential election reflects a principled approach to governance, emphasizing integrity, accountability, and the rule of law. By aligning with leaders like MK Stalin, Sudershan Reddy highlighted the importance of consensus-building, respect for regional identities, and the protection of constitutional rights. His engagement demonstrated a clear vision for his potential tenure, emphasizing the promotion of justice, citizen welfare, and democratic resilience in India’s evolving political landscape.
