New Delhi, September 9 (HS): The African union on Saturday expressed its gratitude to the G20 countries as the group accepted it as a permanent member. This came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited African union Chairman Azali Assoumani to take his seat at the high table during his inaugural address to the G20 leaders.
Responding to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s post, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, As we strengthen the G20 family with the African Union, we will strengthen partnerships that prioritise inclusive development, leading to a better planet. Construction will take place.
Earlier, Ramaphosa said in a post on X that we are happy that the G20 has accepted the African union as a member of the G20. The global recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to accelerate the transition to low-carbon, climate-resilient, sustainable societies. Developing economies are bearing the brunt of climate change, despite bearing the least responsibility for the crisis.
He said that as countries in Africa and other developing economies, we face the task of meeting our climate commitments amid significant developmental challenges such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment. Climate change, environmental degradation, unsustainable consumption and production, and the depletion of resources are challenges that can only be addressed collectively and with great solidarity. South Africa calls for enhanced and expanded global partnerships for sustainable development. This should be supported by concrete policies and actions as outlined in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development.
