Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has reaffirmed his belief that Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma still have plenty to offer in international cricket. With their exceptional performances in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, both players have once again silenced speculation about their future and reinforced their status as vital members of the Indian team. Shane Watson highlighted their incredible batting form and asserted that young players will need to deliver extraordinary performances to replace them in the squad.

The recently concluded Champions Trophy was a momentous tournament for Indian cricket, with the team securing its third title after a thrilling final against New Zealand. While the focus was largely on whether this event would mark the end of Kohli and Rohit’s ODI careers, both players proved their mettle. Kohli showcased his trademark consistency, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest chasers in ODI history. Rohit, on the other hand, played a crucial knock in the final, demonstrating his ability to rise to the occasion under pressure. Shane Watson emphasized that as long as the duo continues to perform at such a high level, they will rightfully hold their places in the team, keeping younger players at bay.

Shane Watson acknowledged that Kohli and Rohit’s experience and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations remain invaluable. He pointed out that the duo’s performances in the Champions Trophy were evidence of their hunger and determination to compete at the highest level. According to Shane Watson, young cricketers aiming to break into the Indian team must produce extraordinary performances and consistently dominate domestic and international cricket to challenge these seasoned veterans.

Meanwhile, the Champions Trophy also saw a major decision from Australian cricket as Steve Smith announced his retirement from ODIs following Australia’s semi-final exit. Cricket Australia confirmed the news, and while Shane Watson acknowledged Smith’s incredible contributions, he expressed confidence that the decision might prolong his Test career. Shane Watson believes Smith still possesses the skills to compete until the 2027 ODI World Cup but respects his choice to step away from the format.

In addition to his analysis of international cricket, Shane Watson himself has been in sublime form in the International Masters League (IML), where he has already notched up three centuries in four matches. At 43, Shane Watson continues to impress with his performances against legendary players, including Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, and Jacques Kallis. Reflecting on the experience, Shane Watson described the IML as an opportunity to truly appreciate the greatness of his cricketing heroes and expressed gratitude for the chance to compete alongside them once again.
