India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been sidelined from competitive cricket since January due to a back injury, and reports suggest his return to action in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) might also face delays. The recurrence of his injury has sparked serious concerns about his long-term future, with former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond warning that another setback in the same area could be career-threatening. Jasprit Bumrah is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Shane Bond, who himself dealt with multiple back injuries during his playing days, drew parallels between his career and Jasprit Bumrah’s current situation. Bond underwent back surgery at the age of 29, the same age at which Jasprit Bumrah had his operation. Despite pushing through his injuries and extending his career until 34, Bond eventually had to retire from all formats within a short span due to recurring fitness issues. His experience has made him particularly cautious about Jasprit Bumrah’s workload and recovery process.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Bond stressed the importance of managing Jasprit Bumrah’s workload carefully, especially considering India’s upcoming five-Test series in England. He advised the Indian team management to avoid playing Jasprit Bumrah in more than two consecutive matches, emphasizing that transitioning from the IPL to Test cricket poses a significant risk. According to Bond, the BCCI must prioritize the pacer’s long-term fitness, as overburdening him during the England series could have dire consequences.

With the five-Test series against England scheduled between June 28 and August 3, India faces a crucial challenge in handling Jasprit Bumrah’s workload. The fast bowler had an intense outing in India’s previous five-Test series against Australia, where he bowled 151.2 overs, including a grueling 52-over spell in Melbourne. Bond believes that such a heavy workload, if repeated, could put Jasprit Bumrah at significant risk of re-injury. He emphasized that given Jasprit Bumrah’s value to India’s future campaigns, including the next ODI World Cup, the team must adopt a cautious approach.

Bond further stated that if Jasprit Bumrah suffers another injury in the same spot, it could be a career-ending blow. He expressed doubts about whether another surgery in that area would be possible, making workload management even more critical. He urged the BCCI and team management to plan strategically, possibly limiting Jasprit Bumrah’s participation to three or four Tests instead of all five, ensuring he remains fit for future tournaments.

As India gears up for a demanding season, the management faces a tough decision regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness. While his presence is crucial for the team’s success, a measured approach will be necessary to ensure he remains an asset for Indian cricket in the years to come.
