Nepalese leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane achieved a significant milestone in T20 international cricket by becoming the second-fastest bowler to reach 100 wickets. He accomplished this feat during Nepal’s T20 World Cup 2024 match against Bangladesh on Monday, June 17 at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent. Sandeep Lamichhane achieved the milestone in his 54th match, placing him just behind Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, who achieved it in his 53rd match.
Sandeep Lamichhane’s achievement also marks a historic moment for Nepal, as he becomes the first player from his country to reach the 100-wicket landmark in T20Is. His journey to this milestone was briefly interrupted when he was denied a visa twice for matches in the USA. However, he returned to showcase his prowess in the West Indies, contributing significantly to Nepal’s campaign.
In the match against Bangladesh, Sandeep Lamichhane was exceptional with the ball, finishing with figures of 4-1-17-2. He dismissed Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Jaker Ali Anik, playing a pivotal role in restricting Bangladesh to a total of 106 all out in 19.3 overs. Sandeep Lamichhane’s ability to trouble the Bangladesh batsmen underscored his importance to the Nepalese team.
Alongside Sandeep Lamichhane, Sompal Kami, Dipendra Singh Airee, and Rohit Paudel also made notable contributions with the ball, each picking up two wickets. Despite several batters reaching double figures, Bangladesh struggled to build partnerships against Nepal’s disciplined bowling attack. Shakib Al Hasan top-scored for Bangladesh with 17 runs off 22 balls.
The performance by Sandeep Lamichhane and his teammates highlights Nepal’s growing presence and competitiveness in international cricket, particularly in T20 formats.
