After Pakistan’s exit from the T20 World Cup following USA’s match against Ireland being called off, Babar Azam has expressed uncertainty about relinquishing his role as captain, emphasizing that the final decision rests with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
In a post-match press conference, Babar Azam reflected on Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the tournament, particularly lamenting their inability to capitalize on advantageous positions in crucial matches against USA and India.
“We were not able to perform as our players. I think we did not play well as a team. It’s not that we lost because of one person or he did this or that. As a team we lost,” Babar Azam stated.
Regarding his captaincy future, Babar Azam clarified that he intends to consult with the PCB before making any definitive announcements. He highlighted his earlier decision to step down from captaincy across formats after the ODI World Cup last year, only to be reinstated by the PCB earlier this year.
“If I have to leave the captaincy, this decision, I will tell you openly. I will not announce anything behind the scenes. Whatever happens, will happen in front of you. But for now, I have not thought about it. The decision is of the PCB,” Babar Azam affirmed.
Pakistan’s campaign in the T20 World Cup saw mixed results, including victories over Canada but crucial losses to India and the USA, ultimately leading to their elimination from the tournament.
Babar Azam’s uncertainty about his captaincy adds to the intrigue surrounding Pakistan cricket as they regroup after their T20 World Cup disappointment.
