Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, who arrived in India for a two-day state visit, was accorded a grand ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. This marks his second visit to India since March 2015 and comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit is expected to bolster diplomatic ties, economic cooperation, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
The ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan saw the Emir being welcomed with full state honors, including a guard of honor and the playing of national anthems. Following the formal welcome, Sheikh Tamim and President Droupadi Murmu introduced their respective delegations, underscoring the significance of the visit in fostering bilateral cooperation across various sectors. The visit reflects the deep-rooted relationship between India and Qatar, which has evolved significantly over the years, particularly in trade, investment, energy, technology, and people-to-people ties.
One of the highlights of Sheikh Tamim’s visit is his scheduled bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House. The discussions, set to take place at noon, will focus on enhancing economic and strategic cooperation, strengthening trade ties, and addressing regional and global challenges. India and Qatar have witnessed robust economic collaboration, with Qatar being a key supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India and both countries working closely in investment and infrastructure projects. The meeting is expected to include deliberations on expanding trade volumes, fostering technology-driven partnerships, and exploring new avenues of cooperation in sectors such as defense, security, and digital transformation.
At 1:00 p.m., India and Qatar will formalize their commitments with the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) at Hyderabad House. These agreements will pave the way for deeper engagement between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, including energy security, trade facilitation, fintech collaboration, and cultural exchanges. The signing of MoUs is expected to solidify long-term cooperation in sectors that are crucial for both economies.
Later in the evening, at 7:00 p.m., Sheikh Tamim will call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she will host a banquet in his honor. The banquet will serve as an opportunity for further diplomatic discussions and a reflection on the strong and growing ties between India and Qatar. This engagement underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its relations with the Gulf nation, which is home to a significant Indian diaspora and plays a strategic role in energy and economic cooperation.
Ahead of Sheikh Tamim’s arrival, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement highlighting the deep historical and cultural ties between the two countries, built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect. The statement emphasized the significant strides made in recent years in various fields, including trade, investment, technology, and people-to-people relations, underscoring the increasing interdependence between the two nations in global affairs.
The visit commenced with a warm personal welcome by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Air Force Station in Palam on Monday evening. In a special gesture, the Prime Minister personally received Sheikh Tamim upon his arrival in New Delhi. The leaders shared a warm embrace, symbolizing the close friendship and strong partnership between India and Qatar. The Ministry of External Affairs further reinforced this sentiment by sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A special gesture for a special friend! PM Modi welcomed HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of Qatar, at the airport as he arrived in New Delhi on his second state visit to India. The visit will further strengthen the bonds of the India-Qatar partnership.”
The visit will conclude with Sheikh Tamim’s departure from India at 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday night. The two-day trip is expected to yield significant outcomes, reinforcing the shared vision of India and Qatar for a stronger, more prosperous partnership across multiple domains.
