Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his warm wishes to Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who was formally sworn in as the new Emir of the State of Kuwait on Wednesday. Sheikh Meshal assumed the role following the demise of his predecessor, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
In a statement, Prime Minister Modi expressed, “Greetings and felicitations to His Highness Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for taking over as the Amir of the State of Kuwait.” He further conveyed his confidence that the bilateral relations between India and Kuwait would strengthen in the years to come, emphasizing the flourishing Indian community in Kuwait.
Sheikh Meshal had played a role as Kuwait’s de facto ruler during the period of Sheikh Nawaf’s reign, owing to the latter’s health challenges. The passing of 86-year-old Sheikh Nawaf last Saturday prompted India to observe a one-day state mourning on Sunday. The Union home ministry issued a directive for the national flag to fly at half-mast throughout India during the mourning period, with a suspension of official entertainment.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of Parliament, also expressed its condolences on the demise of Sheikh Nawaf. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar acknowledged the close and friendly relations between India and Kuwait under the leadership of the late Emir. The Chairman expressed solidarity with the royal family, leadership, and people of Kuwait during this moment of grief.
