  • Honorary degrees to spiritual leader and industrialist at fifteenth convocation

President Draupadi Murmu will visit National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur on december 29 to preside over its fifteenth convocation ceremony, an event that will mark an important academic milestone for more than a thousand graduating students while also recognising distinguished contributions to society, spirituality, and industry through the conferment of honorary degrees.

The convocation ceremony is expected to bring together students, parents, faculty members, administrators, and invited guests at the institute’s campus in jamshedpur. It will formally acknowledge the academic journeys of students who have successfully completed undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, while also highlighting the role of technical education in shaping india’s future. The presence of the president of india adds national significance to the event and reflects the growing stature of nit jamshedpur among the country’s leading technical institutions.

degrees, students, and the scale of the convocation ceremony

According to institute officials, a total of 1,114 students have successfully completed their respective programmes and will be awarded degrees during the fifteenth convocation. Of these, 612 students will be physically present at the ceremony to receive their degrees directly from the president. The remaining graduates will receive their degrees in absentia, a practice that allows students who are unable to attend due to professional or personal commitments to still be formally recognised.

Among those attending in person, 417 students belong to undergraduate programmes across various branches of engineering, reflecting the institute’s core focus on technical education. Another 149 students have completed postgraduate programmes, including m.tech and m.sc degrees, demonstrating advanced academic training and specialisation. In addition, 46 doctoral researchers will be awarded phd degrees, highlighting the institute’s expanding role in research, innovation, and knowledge creation.

Gautam sutradhar, director of nit jamshedpur, stated during a press conference at the adityapur campus that the convocation is not merely a ceremonial occasion but a celebration of sustained academic effort, discipline, and perseverance. He noted that each graduating student represents years of rigorous study, practical training, and intellectual growth, supported by faculty members and institutional infrastructure.

The convocation ceremony will follow established academic traditions, including the formal presentation of candidates, the conferring of degrees, and the presidential address. Such addresses often emphasise the responsibilities of educated citizens, the importance of ethical leadership, and the role of science and technology in addressing national and global challenges. Students and faculty alike view the president’s address as a moment of inspiration and reflection at the threshold of professional life.

Preparations for the event are being carried out in coordination with local administration and security agencies due to the president’s visit. Officials have indicated that arrangements are being made to ensure smooth conduct of the ceremony while maintaining the dignity and decorum associated with such a high-profile academic event.

honorary degrees and recognition of excellence beyond academia

In addition to awarding degrees to graduating students, nit jamshedpur will confer honorary degrees on two individuals whose contributions extend beyond the academic sphere into spirituality, culture, and industry. The institute will award an honorary doctor of literature degree to Swami Govind Dev Giri Ji Maharaj, treasurer of the Sri Ramjanmabhoomi Tirth Kshetra Trust. The honour recognises his long-standing association with spiritual leadership, cultural discourse, and social initiatives that have influenced a wide section of society.

Institute officials explained that the decision to confer the honorary d-litt degree reflects an acknowledgement of contributions that enrich cultural and ethical understanding, values that are increasingly seen as complementary to technical and scientific education. By honouring figures from diverse backgrounds, the institute aims to expose students to multiple dimensions of leadership and service.

An honorary doctor of philosophy degree will also be conferred upon Rabindra Kumar Behera, founder of the RSB Group of Companies. Behera is a prominent industrialist with roots in the region and is widely recognised for his contributions to manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and employment generation. His company has played a significant role in the automotive components sector, both in india and internationally.

By honouring behera, nit jamshedpur seeks to underline the importance of industry-academia linkage and the role of entrepreneurship in national development. Institute authorities noted that such recognition is intended to inspire students to apply their technical knowledge not only in established career paths but also in innovation-driven enterprises that contribute to economic growth.

The convocation will also feature the award of gold medals to students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance. Krishnashish mandal will receive a gold medal for securing a cgpa of 9.64 in m.sc physics, while priyanshu raj will be honoured with a gold medal for achieving a cgpa of 9.52 in b.tech electrical engineering. These achievements reflect consistent academic excellence and dedication over the course of their programmes.

Faculty members noted that such recognitions serve as motivation for current and future students, reinforcing a culture of merit and hard work. They also reflect the institute’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards and encouraging students to pursue excellence in both coursework and research.

Over the years, nit jamshedpur has expanded its academic offerings, strengthened its research infrastructure, and enhanced collaboration with industry and research organisations. The institute’s leadership has emphasised continuous improvement in teaching quality, curriculum relevance, and student support systems. The fifteenth convocation thus comes at a time when the institute is consolidating its role as a centre of technical education and research in eastern india.

The president’s participation in the ceremony is expected to lend further visibility to these efforts and highlight the broader importance of public investment in higher education. For graduating students, the convocation represents not only the culmination of years of academic effort but also the beginning of new responsibilities as professionals, researchers, and citizens contributing to society.
