The Indian sporting community has expressed its grief and outrage after a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, claiming the lives of at least 26 civilians. The attack, attributed to the Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy group of the Pakistan-based terror organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has led to renewed calls for severing all sports ties with Pakistan. High-profile athletes, including former cricketers, Olympic medalists, and other sports icons, have condemned the attack and urged for justice and stronger action against those responsible.
Cricketers and Athletes Call for Stronger Action
Shreevats Goswami, a former India cricketer, strongly voiced his opinion against engaging in cricketing relations with Pakistan, stating that such violence against innocent civilians underscores the futility of sports diplomacy. He criticized those who previously argued that sports should transcend politics, pointing to the continuous bloodshed in Kashmir as a reason to reevaluate sporting engagements with Pakistan. Goswami, who had recently visited Pahalgam, expressed his heartbreak at witnessing the return of violence in a region that had shown signs of peace.
Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh also condemned the attack, expressing his belief that India’s soldiers would retaliate against the cowardly act. He emphasized that the plans of those attempting to disrupt peace in Jammu and Kashmir would not succeed. Other prominent figures such as Gautam Gambhir, PV Sindhu, Neeraj Chopra, and Abhinav Bindra echoed similar sentiments, praying for the victims and their families, while vowing that India would stand united against terror.
Wider Reactions from Indian Sports Icons
The attack has also drawn sharp reactions from cricketers like Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, who both expressed their sorrow and solidarity with the victims’ families. Raina condemned the cowardly act of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and pledged that justice would prevail. Harbhajan Singh called the act unforgivable, while former hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and shuttler Saina Nehwal demanded swift justice for the victims. Sreejesh stated that condemnation was not enough and that justice should follow, while Nehwal reminded the attackers that India would remain united in the face of terrorism.
Other athletes such as Nikhat Zareen, Parthiv Patel, and Shubman Gill also offered their condolences. The attack in Pahalgam has sparked an outpouring of support from the Indian sporting community, reflecting the deep emotions felt by the nation in the aftermath of this tragic event.
