US President Joe Biden has announced the imposition of heavy tariffs on various Chinese imports, including electric vehicles, batteries, steel, solar cells, and aluminum. President Joe Biden emphasized that these measures aim to prevent American workers from being disadvantaged by unfair trade practices.

In his address from the Rose Garden of the White House, President Biden asserted the importance of fair competition with China, highlighting ongoing investments in America. He criticized China’s state-backed subsidies and anti-competitive tactics, which he argued have negatively impacted global markets.

The newly announced tariffs include a 100 percent tariff on electric vehicles, a 50 percent tariff on semiconductors, and a 25 percent tariff on electric vehicle batteries from China. President Biden emphasized the need to ensure a level playing field for American companies and workers, particularly in critical sectors like electric vehicles.

President Joe Biden also criticized his predecessor, Donald Trump, for failing to significantly increase American exports through previous trade deals with China. US Trade Representative Katherine Tie echoed these sentiments, noting that previous agreements did not effectively address unfair trade practices.

The increased tariffs, covering approximately USD 18 billion of trade, are part of President Biden’s efforts to promote fair competition and defend American workers from unfair practices. Tie emphasized that the US will continue to consult with allies to address shared concerns regarding Chinese trade practices.

The president’s directive also includes a process to request exclusions for certain production machinery, allowing solar and clean manufacturers to diversify their suppliers while maintaining competitiveness.

Overall, President Biden’s actions aim to address longstanding trade imbalances and ensure fair competition in critical sectors of the economy.
