Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a landmark state visit to Brunei, marking the first-ever bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the Southeast Asian nation. The visit is part of a two-nation tour, with Singapore scheduled as the next stop. Here are the key updates from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brunei:
On the second day of his tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. The Sultan, who is the second-longest reigning monarch globally after the late Queen Elizabeth II, was once listed as the world’s richest person, with an estimated net worth of around $30 billion. The meeting, held at the Sultan’s official residence, the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, focused on strengthening bilateral relations between India and Brunei. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared on social media, expressing delight at the meeting and highlighting the discussions on enhancing trade, commercial links, and people-to-people exchanges.
This visit is particularly significant as it coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei. During their discussions, PM Modi and Sultan Bolkiah covered a broad range of topics including defense, trade and investment, energy, space technology, and health. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed as part of this diplomatic engagement.
The meeting also included a banquet lunch hosted by the Sultan at the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, which holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest palace. The palace features 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, and 44 staircases constructed from 38 types of marble.
Prior to the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, a renowned architectural gem in Brunei, and inaugurated the new Chancery of the Indian High Commission in the country. He also engaged with local officials, scholars, and the Indian community during his visit.
Following his time in Brunei, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Singapore, where he is scheduled to meet with members of the Indian community and be hosted for dinner by Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. This tour marks a significant step in reinforcing India’s diplomatic ties with the Southeast Asian region.
