Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Thailand on April 3-4 to attend the BIMSTEC Summit, a regional forum that fosters cooperation among South and Southeast Asian countries. The summit will be held amidst the aftermath of the massive earthquake in Myanmar, which also affected parts of Thailand. However, there are no reports suggesting that the summit will be impacted by the recent disaster.
The BIMSTEC Summit is expected to adopt the Bangkok Vision 2030 and focus on enhancing regional cooperation in several key areas, including maritime security and climate change adaptation. Other BIMSTEC member nations will also participate, contributing to discussions on strengthening ties and addressing shared challenges across the region.
The theme of the summit, “Proactive, Resilient and Open BIMSTEC,” reflects the intention to forge stronger ties in areas like trade, infrastructure development, and climate change adaptation. The leaders are expected to deliberate on how to drive greater momentum in these areas to ensure long-term regional stability and prosperity. India, as a leading member of BIMSTEC, is likely to play a crucial role in shaping the discussions and guiding the future direction of the group.
In addition to the summit, PM Narendra Modi will hold bilateral meetings with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, where they will discuss strengthening India-Thailand relations and review progress in areas of mutual interest. Narendra Modi is also scheduled to meet with King Rama X to discuss further collaborations between the two countries. These high-level engagements will aim to enhance bilateral ties in sectors like trade, technology, and cultural exchange.
After the BIMSTEC Summit, Narendra Modi will travel to Sri Lanka for a three-day visit, where he will meet with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The two leaders will review the progress of bilateral cooperation, focusing on the partnerships established during previous meetings, including the joint vision for fostering partnerships for a shared future.
Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka will also include inaugurating development projects in Anuradhapura, funded by India, to further strengthen the ties between the two nations.
