Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district have booked organisers and participants of a pro-Palestine rally for allegedly disturbing public order during a procession on Youm-e-Quds. The rally, held in Sonpah village, saw a large crowd raising controversial slogans, causing concerns about the law-and-order situation in the area. The police took swift action, registering a case and initiating an investigation.
The procession in question was part of the annual Youm-e-Quds observance, which occurs on the last Friday of the Islamic holy month of Ramzan. This day is dedicated to pro-Palestine demonstrations that express solidarity with the Palestinian cause. In Budgam’s Sonpah village, the rally was organised to mark the occasion, but it quickly attracted attention for the slogans raised by participants. Police officials reported that the slogans, deemed objectionable, sparked unrest, which led to traffic disruptions as protesters blocked a key road between Sonpah and Beerwah.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the organisers, through their actions, appeared to be attempting to create a volatile situation. Due to these disruptions, public movement was hindered, prompting the authorities to act swiftly. A case was filed against the organisers and participants under sections 126(2) and 189(6) of the Indian Penal Code. The Beerwah police station has launched an investigation into the matter, and legal proceedings will follow.
Law enforcement agencies have called on the public to refrain from actions that could disturb the peace and to respect law and order. This incident in Budgam follows a pattern of pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the region, some of which have previously led to heightened tensions. Notably, a similar rally was held in September 2024, where hundreds of protesters rallied in solidarity with Palestine, condemning Israeli actions. The rally had resulted in political figures, including former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, suspending their campaigning in solidarity with the protesters.
As the investigation continues, the authorities are working to ensure that such events do not disrupt public life or violate the law. The local administration is urging citizens to maintain peace and engage in lawful demonstrations.
