A tragic incident unfolded in China as a 19-year-old woman named Tongtong died by suicide after being pressured into an engagement arranged by her family. According to reports from the South China Morning Post, Tongtong was coerced into accepting a marriage proposal from a man she had met just five days prior.
Tongtong, who ran a small clothes shop with her mother in their hometown, was compelled to agree to the engagement despite her reluctance. Her mother, believing the groom’s financial stability would improve their lives, persuaded Tongtong to proceed with the arrangement. A matchmaker also played a role in convincing her to accept the proposal.
During the engagement ceremony, the man’s family paid Tongtong’s mother a significant bride’s price of 270,000 yuan (approximately Rs 33,40,730). However, Tongtong quickly developed reservations about the man due to his rude and demanding behavior. Despite her attempts to end the engagement, she was dissuaded by the matchmaker, citing her mother’s financial constraints.
Tragically, 17 days after the engagement, Tongtong took her own life by jumping into a river near her home. Following her death, the fiancé demanded the return of the bride’s price. Tongtong’s mother returned 180,000 yuan but refused to refund the full amount, alleging the man had lied about his age.
In response, the man’s family protested by blocking Tongtong’s mother’s shopfront with a car and broadcasting demands for the remaining money through a loudspeaker.
The aftermath of Tongtong’s death has sparked widespread outrage on Chinese social media, prompting discussions on marriage coercion and women’s rights. Many users have expressed sympathy for Tongtong and criticized the practice of forced marriages, which are prevalent in underdeveloped areas of China.
Forced marriages remain a significant issue in Chinese society, particularly in rural areas, where societal pressure often dictates marital decisions, contributing to tragedies like Tongtong’s death.
