  • Modi strengthens Saudi ties, signs key bilateral agreements in Jeddah.

In a visit marked by deep diplomatic symbolism and significant agreements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah on Tuesday, further cementing the evolving strategic partnership between India and Saudi Arabia. The meeting saw both nations reaffirming their strong bilateral relations by signing four major agreements, forming new ministerial committees, and laying groundwork for joint projects, even as PM Narendra Modi had to cut short his visit due to a tragic terror attack in Kashmir.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jeddah on Monday, escorted by Saudi Air Force F-15 fighter jets—an honor reserved for only the closest allies. Upon arrival, he was welcomed with a ceremonial 21-gun salute and greeted by enthusiastic members of the Indian community. At the Al Salam Palace, PM Narendra Modi was warmly received by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whom he affectionately referred to as “my brother.”

Key Strategic Advancements

The bilateral talks culminated in the signing of four critical agreements covering defence and space, education, health, and communications. The two countries also agreed to collaborate on establishing two refineries in India, further bolstering energy cooperation. Additionally, a joint High-Level Task Force on Investment reached an understanding to accelerate Saudi investments in India, covering sectors like energy, infrastructure, fintech, telecommunications, and pharmaceuticals.

During the meeting, the leaders also co-chaired the second session of the Saudi-India Strategic Partnership Council, originally established during PM Narendra Modi’s 2019 visit. The council reviewed ongoing collaboration across various sectors including trade, security, agriculture, and people-to-people ties, highlighting the comprehensive scope of the bilateral relationship.

Terror Attack Overshadows Visit

PM Narendra Modi’s visit was originally intended to include a state dinner, community address, and a factory visit to meet Indian workers. However, following the terror attack in Kashmir that killed 26 people—many of them tourists—the Prime Minister cancelled these events and left immediately for New Delhi. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed solidarity with India over the incident, assuring full support.

Before departing, PM Narendra Modi also raised the matter of increasing the Hajj quota for Indian pilgrims. He spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah to review the situation in Kashmir and has called for a high-level meeting upon his return to address the attack.
