Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged citizens not to panic over rumours of an energy crisis or LPG shortage amid escalating tensions in West Asia, assuring that India will successfully overcome the situation just as it did during the Covid-19 pandemic. Addressing a public rally in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, the Prime Minister emphasised that the government is closely monitoring the global situation and taking steps to safeguard the country’s energy security and protect Indian citizens abroad.
The remarks come at a time when geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have raised concerns about global energy supplies and the potential impact on fuel availability. With conflicts affecting shipping routes and oil supply chains, speculation about shortages and rising prices has spread across social media and public discourse. However, the Prime Minister called on citizens to remain calm and avoid believing rumours or misinformation.
He stressed that India’s policies are guided by the principle of “India First”, ensuring that every decision taken by the government prioritises national interests, economic stability and the safety of Indian citizens.
Government Monitoring Energy Situation Closely
Speaking about the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the Prime Minister said the situation has affected global energy supply chains and created uncertainty in international markets. Countries around the world are facing fluctuations in oil prices and supply disruptions due to geopolitical tensions in the region.
However, he assured the public that the Indian government is closely tracking developments and taking necessary measures to ensure there is no disruption in fuel supply within the country.
Modi urged people not to panic about rumours related to LPG shortages or fuel supply issues, saying such speculation can create unnecessary fear and confusion among citizens.
He reminded people that India had previously faced several global challenges but successfully managed them through coordinated national efforts.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the country demonstrated resilience and unity, ensuring that essential services continued and supply chains remained operational despite severe disruptions worldwide.
The Prime Minister said the same spirit of resilience would help India navigate the current geopolitical uncertainties as well.
He highlighted that India’s energy strategy has evolved significantly over the years, with diversification of supply sources and stronger strategic reserves helping the country withstand global shocks.
According to him, these steps have strengthened India’s energy security and reduced the risk of sudden disruptions affecting domestic consumers.
He reiterated that the government is working constantly to ensure that citizens do not face any difficulties in accessing essential resources.
Attack on Opposition Over Rumour-Mongering
While addressing the rally, the Prime Minister also criticised opposition parties for spreading panic and misinformation regarding the energy situation.
He alleged that certain political groups were attempting to create fear among citizens by exaggerating the impact of the global crisis.
According to Modi, such statements could worsen public anxiety and undermine confidence during sensitive situations.
He specifically accused Congress and Left parties of making irresponsible comments that could lead to confusion among the public.
The Prime Minister argued that political leaders should act responsibly and avoid making statements that might destabilise public confidence in the government’s ability to manage crises.
He emphasised that maintaining calm and unity among citizens is essential during periods of global uncertainty.
Modi said India has consistently demonstrated its ability to respond effectively to crises through strong governance and coordinated policymaking.
He also highlighted the importance of relying only on verified information from official sources rather than rumours circulating on social media platforms.
Criticism of DMK and Focus on Development
During his speech in Tamil Nadu, the Prime Minister also launched a sharp attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in the state.
He accused the party of promoting dynasty politics and corruption while failing to fulfil promises made to the people during the 2021 Assembly elections.
According to Modi, governance under the DMK revolves around a single family, with power remaining concentrated within the same political dynasty regardless of changes in ministers or legislators.
He alleged that corruption had become institutionalised under the current administration, claiming that Tamil Nadu was being treated as an “ATM for one family.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks come as political activity intensifies in the state ahead of upcoming elections.
At the same rally, Modi also highlighted infrastructure development initiatives launched by the central government in Tamil Nadu.
Earlier in the day, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth approximately ₹5,650 crore in the state.
These projects include infrastructure improvements and transportation initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth and creating employment opportunities for young people.
The Prime Minister said such development initiatives would contribute significantly to strengthening the state’s economy and improving connectivity across regions.
He also emphasised the importance of expanding airport facilities in cities like Madurai and Tiruchirappalli, which he said would enhance tourism, trade and investment opportunities.
According to Modi, these infrastructure projects would create thousands of job opportunities and support the aspirations of Tamil Nadu’s youth.
He reiterated that the central government is committed to working for the welfare and development of all states, ensuring balanced growth across the country.
The Prime Minister concluded by expressing confidence that India would successfully overcome any challenges posed by the current geopolitical situation.
Just as the country emerged stronger from the Covid-19 crisis, he said India would continue to demonstrate resilience and unity in facing future challenges.
