  • The Prime Minister praised leaders like Sardar Patel and Rajendra Prasad for rebuilding the temple after Independence.
  • PM Modi described Somnath Temple as a symbol of India’s civilisational resilience and national unity while marking 75 years of its restoration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the historic legacy of Somnath Temple while commemorating 75 years of the reopening of the restored shrine, describing the temple as one of the strongest symbols of India’s civilisational resilience, spiritual continuity and national unity. Ahead of his scheduled visit to Somnath on May 11, the Prime Minister reflected on the temple’s remarkable journey from repeated destruction to national revival, calling it a timeless reminder that India’s cultural identity has survived every challenge of history.

The historic Somnath Temple, located on the western coast of Gujarat near the Arabian Sea, remains one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus and carries enormous historical, spiritual and civilisational significance. Over centuries, the temple witnessed repeated invasions and destruction, yet continued to be rebuilt through the determination and faith of generations of devotees.

In his detailed message marking the anniversary of the temple’s reopening after restoration, PM Modi described Somnath as a living representation of India’s indestructible spirit. According to him, the story of Somnath is not merely about the rebuilding of a temple structure but about the rebuilding of national confidence, cultural pride and civilisational consciousness after centuries of invasions and colonial domination.

The Prime Minister said every wave touching the shores of Somnath carries the memory of India’s survival through countless storms of history. He remarked that empires rose and fell, rulers changed and conflicts reshaped the subcontinent, but the spiritual devotion associated with Somnath never disappeared from public consciousness.

Modi repeatedly referred to Somnath as a symbol of “From Ruin To Renewal,” stating that the temple demonstrates how India’s cultural foundations remain impossible to erase despite repeated attempts throughout history.

The Prime Minister highlighted how the reconstruction of Somnath after Independence became a nationwide movement reflecting emotional unity across the country. He noted that people from different regions and backgrounds contributed toward rebuilding the shrine, turning the restoration into a larger national mission linked with civilisational self respect.

According to Modi, Somnath remained spiritually alive in the hearts of millions even during periods when the physical structure stood damaged or destroyed. He stressed that faith connected to the temple survived every historical assault and continued passing from generation to generation.

The Prime Minister also remembered several historical personalities associated with the protection and reconstruction of Somnath over different eras. He praised saints, rulers, scholars and warriors who defended the shrine and preserved its traditions despite repeated attacks.

A major focus of Modi’s message involved the role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in rebuilding Somnath after Independence. The Prime Minister recalled how Patel visited the ruins of the temple in November 1947 and publicly announced that Somnath would be reconstructed with support from the people of India.

According to Modi, Patel viewed the restoration not simply as a religious issue but as a matter of national dignity and civilisational confidence for newly independent India.

The Prime Minister noted that although Sardar Patel passed away before witnessing the completion of the restored structure, his vision was carried forward by K. M. Munshi and several others who remained committed to the reconstruction effort.

Modi also highlighted the historic inauguration ceremony of 1951 when India’s first President Rajendra Prasad reopened the restored temple despite political reservations expressed by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

According to the Prime Minister, Rajendra Prasad’s participation gave the event enormous symbolic significance because it reflected the emotional importance of Somnath within India’s cultural memory.

Modi recalled Rajendra Prasad’s famous belief that anything built upon deep faith and devotion can never truly be destroyed. The Prime Minister said those words continue inspiring millions of Indians even today.

Throughout his message, PM Modi repeatedly emphasised the theme of civilisational unity. He said every region of Bharat remains spiritually interconnected beyond language, geography or regional identity. According to him, this shared civilisational consciousness continues to unite Indians despite diversity.

The Prime Minister also linked Somnath’s journey with the modern global context. He argued that at a time when societies worldwide increasingly face conflict, division and identity crises, the story of Somnath offers a powerful lesson about resilience, continuity and collective memory.

Modi further announced that special prayers and rituals would continue at Somnath for the next thousand days in honour of those who sacrificed to protect the temple across centuries. He welcomed growing participation from devotees contributing toward the commemorative ceremonies.

The Prime Minister invited citizens from across the country to visit Somnath during the anniversary period. According to him, pilgrims visiting the temple experience not only spiritual devotion but also the energy of an ancient civilisation that has repeatedly rebuilt itself despite adversity.

Modi described Somnath as more than a religious destination. He said the temple symbolises the enduring continuity of Indian civilisation and reflects the values that have connected generations for thousands of years.

The Prime Minister also connected the restoration anniversary with the government’s broader approach of combining development and heritage preservation under the vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi.”

He referred to major redevelopment and infrastructure projects around spiritual centres including Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Kedarnath Temple, Ram Mandir, Mahakaleshwar Temple and Kamakhya Temple. According to Modi, these projects aim to modernise facilities for pilgrims while protecting the traditional and cultural identity of ancient religious sites.

The Prime Minister stated that strengthening pilgrimage infrastructure also generates employment opportunities, boosts tourism and supports local economies while preserving heritage.

According to Modi, such efforts contribute toward the larger national vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” by strengthening cultural connections across states and communities.

The Prime Minister also reflected on his personal emotional connection with Somnath. He recalled participating in the Somnath Swabhiman Parv earlier in 2026, which marked one thousand years since the first major recorded attack on the temple.

Modi said being associated with both commemorative occasions in the same year was a matter of deep personal honour and emotional significance for him.

Historians widely regard Somnath as one of the most symbolically important temples in Indian history because of its repeated destruction and reconstruction across different centuries. The present structure today stands not only as a sacred temple but also as a powerful symbol of cultural endurance and national memory.

The anniversary celebrations are expected to witness participation from thousands of devotees, scholars, saints and cultural organisations from different parts of the country. Extensive security arrangements and special religious events are also being planned around the occasion.

The Prime Minister concluded his message by urging citizens to remain deeply connected with India’s civilisational roots while embracing modern progress and development. According to him, the story of Somnath proves that a civilisation grounded in faith, unity and resilience can survive every challenge of history and continue inspiring future generations.
