  • CPIM's Vijayan supports Anwar's controversial remarks on Rahul Gandhi.
  • Congress demands action, accuses CPIM of orchestrating derogatory remarks.

A recent controversy has erupted between the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] in Kerala, with CPIM Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan openly supporting MLA PV Anwar’s contentious statements.

MLA PV Anwar, a member of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), sparked outrage by suggesting that the DNA of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should be examined. He further disparaged Gandhi, stating that he had become a fourth-grade citizen unworthy of his Gandhi surname.

Anwar’s remarks came in response to Gandhi’s criticism of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during election campaigns in Kerala. Gandhi questioned why Vijayan had not been interrogated or arrested by central agencies despite several allegations against him. CPIM leaders condemned Gandhi’s statements, urging him to focus his criticism on Prime Minister Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) instead of Vijayan.

In a surprising turn, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan defended MLA PV Anwar’s controversial remarks, asserting that Gandhi was not beyond criticism and would face consequences for his statements. This public endorsement by Vijayan has intensified tensions between the CPIM and the Congress in the state.

Responding to Vijayan’s support of Anwar’s remarks, the Congress swiftly condemned the CPIM, filing a complaint with the Election Commission and demanding action against Anwar. KPCC acting president M M Hassan called for urgent intervention from the Commission and urged the police to register a case against the MLA for insulting Rahul Gandhi and the Nehru family.

Senior Congress leader and AICC Secretary K C Venugopal also criticized the CPIM, alleging that the party had orchestrated the derogatory remarks against Gandhi to undermine the Nehru family.

The escalating feud between the Congress and the CPIM underscores the intense political climate in Kerala ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. As the parties continue to exchange barbs, the state braces for further political turbulence in the days to come.
