Machettira Raju Poovamma, the most experienced member of India’s women’s 4x400m relay team, has secured a spot in the upcoming Paris Olympics. The team qualified after finishing second in their heat at the World Athletics Relay in the Bahamas. Machettira Raju Poovamma, 34, is making a notable comeback to the sport following a two-year suspension for a doping violation in 2021.
From the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, Machettira Raju Poovamma shared her motivations with PTI, emphasizing her desire to defy age-related stereotypes in sports. “I wanted to prove that I am still a pivotal member of the relay team and capable of competing at high levels. My successful return to the sport has been incredibly satisfying, and I am thrilled,” she stated.
Machettira Raju Poovamma’s career is decorated with numerous accolades, including medals from the Asian Games and participation in the World Championships on four occasions. She missed the Tokyo Olympics due to her suspension and is eager to make a significant impact in Paris. “Having been to the Olympics twice and achieving significant milestones, the Tokyo Olympics eluded me due to my suspension. However, seeing other athletes continue into their late thirties inspired me to not only return but also to demonstrate that age is merely a number,” she explained.
Her journey has not been without challenges. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) initially contested her return at the Goa National Games, claiming her ban period had not concluded. However, this decision was overturned by the anti-doping appeal panel (ADAP) following an intervention by the Kerala High Court, allowing her to resume her career.
Machettira Raju Poovamma, who hails from Karnataka and is married to a fellow international athlete from Kerala, has a history of success including multiple gold medals in Asian Championships and Asian Games. She recounted the emotional and mental struggle she faced during her ban: “The suspension period was incredibly tough. I was mentally shattered and often found myself in tears during practice, but the support from my husband and family was instrumental in my perseverance.”
Despite the setbacks, Machettira Raju Poovamma remains committed to her sport, driven by her passion and the support of her family. “The idea of retiring never crossed my mind, even when others expected it of me. I am in excellent physical shape, possibly even better than in my younger years, and I believe I can achieve better timings now. As long as my body supports me, I have no plans to retire,” she affirmed.
