  • ChatGPT launches free study mode for Indian students' learning boost.
  • Multilingual support enhances personalized education across all student levels.

OpenAI has rolled out a new feature in ChatGPT called “Study Mode,” designed to help students in India learn more effectively by guiding them through concepts instead of just providing quick answers. This AI-powered tool encourages critical thinking, offers step-by-step explanations, and supports voice, image, and text input, making it accessible and interactive for learners across urban and rural settings. Available in 11 Indian languages, this mobile-friendly learning assistant is free for all users.

In a move aimed at transforming the way Indian students use artificial intelligence for learning, OpenAI launched Study Mode in ChatGPT on July 29. The new feature is designed to move beyond traditional question-answer formats and create a deeper, more interactive learning experience. By offering scaffolded responses and encouraging active participation, the tool seeks to foster true comprehension rather than rote memorization. The rollout marks a significant evolution in ChatGPT’s utility for students, educators, and parents alike.

A Step-by-Step Companion for Learners

Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s vice president of education, highlighted how Study Mode represents a shift from passive assistance to active guidance. Instead of simply delivering a solution, the tool walks users through each step involved in finding an answer. This step-by-step method is built around the principle that deeper understanding emerges when students engage with material at every stage of problem-solving.

The feature is available to logged-in users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, with plans for wider rollout in ChatGPT Edu. It supports 11 Indian languages and includes multimodal features that combine voice, image, and text, making it suitable for students with varied learning preferences and accessibility needs. According to Belsky, Study Mode has undergone extensive beta testing in India, particularly with students preparing for competitive exams like the IIT entrance. The results were promising, showing strong performance in complex academic contexts.

This newly launched mode is expected to benefit a wide range of educational activities, from completing homework to preparing for exams and learning new topics. To activate it, users simply need to select the “Study and Learn” option within ChatGPT and input their academic query. Instead of immediately revealing the answer, the AI will prompt the student to think critically and progress gradually through the problem, offering hints and follow-up questions along the way.

Powered by Experts, Built for Real Learning

Study Mode is driven by custom system instructions written in collaboration with educators, scientists, and pedagogy experts. These instructions are designed to align with best practices in education, including Socratic questioning, scaffolding techniques, and personalized assessments. The goal is not just to help students complete tasks but to cultivate an enduring understanding of the subject matter.

The platform employs features such as interactive prompts, knowledge checks, and self-reflection exercises to deepen engagement. These tools enable students to track their learning journey and revisit concepts when necessary. The AI dynamically adjusts its difficulty level based on the student’s responses and past interactions, offering tailored support that grows more refined over time. It also includes short quizzes and open-ended questions with personalized feedback to reinforce learning.

OpenAI believes this personalized and adaptive approach can make a meaningful difference, especially in a diverse educational landscape like India. With its mobile-optimized design and support for regional languages, Study Mode aims to bridge the gap between students in well-resourced schools and those in underprivileged areas. The company sees this as a step toward democratizing access to high-quality academic support.

Flexibility is another key advantage. Users can easily toggle Study Mode on or off during conversations, allowing them to switch between regular ChatGPT responses and guided learning based on their needs. This allows for both exploration and structured instruction within a single platform.

OpenAI has emphasized the safety and ethical considerations behind this release. Belsky explained that the feature has been thoroughly evaluated to prevent misuse, including attempts to deploy it for cheating during exams or assignments. Like all of OpenAI’s features, Study Mode includes robust content safeguards and behavior protocols to ensure its use aligns with responsible AI practices.

To further enhance its effectiveness, OpenAI is collecting ongoing feedback from Indian users—students, parents, and educators. The company plans to iterate quickly based on this input, refining its responses, improving personalization, and adding more multimodal capabilities such as interactive visuals and video explanations in future updates. It also envisions goal tracking, clearer progress metrics, and deeper integration with core learning goals over time.

OpenAI’s broader ambition is reflected in its collaboration with Stanford’s SCALE Initiative under the NextGenAI banner. Through this partnership, the company is conducting research on how AI impacts learning in K–12 education settings. These insights are expected to inform the development of more effective educational AI tools that support real-world learning outcomes and help students thrive in increasingly digital classrooms.

Ultimately, Study Mode represents OpenAI’s commitment to ensuring that advanced AI tools serve as a means of empowerment for young learners. In a world where artificial intelligence will continue to play a central role in education and employment, equipping students with the ability to interact meaningfully with such technologies is not just an advantage—it’s a necessity.
